My Mother has had small cell lung cancer for over a year now. The tumor is near her heart. She has had chemo and radiation and was told in October that neither is helping very much and she had only a few months to live. Her voice is hoarse and weak and she coughs to the point of vomiting sometimes but other than that she looks good. She has lost some weight but is still overweight and eats well.

Cells have a natural function to "turn off" or die after a set amount of time. cancer cells have that function turned off, so they just keep replicating and make a massive blob called a tumor. if the tumor, and all infected cells are not removed, it blocks up the lungs and doesn't allow oxygen into them.

Cancer just overcomes, unfortunately. Typically a person just becomes increasingly weaker and breathing becomes more difficult (with small cell). It can be either slow or fast. If her breathing becomes difficult for her, she can be put on a morphine drip which helps. people will begin to fade in and out of conciousness, and most of the time it's more difficult for loved ones (you) than it is for the person (your mom) If you haven't contacted a hospice program yet, i would go ahead and do so. I'm so very sorry for what you are going through.
