Dog dying of lung cancer?? my coworker is a smoker, and smoked around her dog for years and years, and now

Dog dying of lung cancer?? my coworker is a smoker, and smoked around her dog for years and years, and now?
the dog is dying of lung cancer due to 2nd hand smoke. she needs to euthanize him, he is just coughing way too much, and is suffering. i can't even look at her or talk to her, because she is keeping him alive, and i went and visited the dog before and he is just suffering. poor baby. anyway, please spread the word, that 2nd hand smoke kills dogs too. if you know a smoker or if you are a smoker don't smoke around your dogs. did you know that?? i didn't till a month ago. to pope the person that answered between Shanna and Mandy..... you sound upset at my question, is it possibly because your dog died because you smoked around it??? FYI im not a vet, and never claimed to be......and just so you know.......how can anyone let a dog suffer? Guess what, I am a smoker, and NEVER smoke around my dogs.

I guess it's no surprise since it harms humans too. Too bad people don't think about pets around when they smoke. I used to smoke but never smoked in any house I lived in. It's also sad that since this is terminal for the dog that she's letting it suffer. Why not put the poor thing out of its suffering. Shame on her!
2 :
I knew that. Secondhand smoke is just as bad for dogs as it is for people. I used to groom a bichon that came into the shop a dark YELLOW color because her owners smoked so much. You can tell which dogs are owned by heavy smokers, the dogs smell like an ashtray.
3 :
That's a terrible thing. no one in my family smokes anymore except for my aunt. Thank you so much! You must have a big heart for caring about dogs around the world so much! You should get a few recommendations from R.O.A.R.-an Animal Planet organization. You're getting one from me!
4 :
I know that a long time ago. 2nd hand smoke kills, whether it be humans or dogs. I read somewhere a long time ago that if you infuse cigarette smoke into a small container with a plant it it, the plant will wither too!
5 :
Oh my dad is A SMOKER and he smokes around r 3 dogs! :o( anyway thank i will pass the message to him so that he stops smoking around the poor pets dog or not no animal deserves that!! i have a 11 year old do so his lungs r not so strong now! mandy m :o) thank lots :o)
6 :
what is your question?? it sounds like your just venting because you a non-qualified vet. has decided she caused the dogs condition. You may or may not be correct, but the bottom line is it's not "your" dog and it really is none of your business how she lives her life.
7 :
It's just pure selfishness on the smoker's part. I have no problem with smokers in general, but it is pretty awful when they smoke around their kids or animals. They are entitled to smoke, but they shouldn't be killing other people or pets in the process. If they have a dog, then SMOKE OUTSIDE!
8 :
I am a smoker, and i never thought of that, but you are right... I will never again smoke when my dog is around. Thank you for this information, I find it really useful, I adore my dog and I don't want something like that to happen to her.
9 :
Pobet...u called him pope.....but......he is crazy..... he is just upset because his dog did prolly die from lung disease because of his ignorant Butt,, don't listen to ignorant people like him. now i agree with megi cool.
10 :
I realize you care deeply for your dogs and dogs period. I guess some people don't realize that animal resistance is not the same as human. May even be an encouragement to quit smoking altogether. Still, I appreciate you compassion.
11 :
that's sad to hear. stop smoking all to gether will help everyone
12 :
Wow I never knew that. Good thing we dont smoke in my family. But PLEASE show the same concern for yourself as you do for your dogs. DITCH THE CIGGIES NOW. We luv you babe and dont want you dying of lung cancer. As for the dog, you can only tell her how you feel but ultimatelly its her decision. I
13 :
Sure I will spread the word, why do dogs have to suffer becuase of humans irresponsiblities care and lack of knowledge that thing that a human can do can affect the dogs health, Not to be mean, But it really sucks and breaks my heart to see or hear how dogs suffer from human mistakes Wish the best
14 :
wow. okay. i hope to shed some light on this one. of course you know i have worked for a vet for years and given that second hand smoke is good for nothing other than plants scientist have NOT been able to prove that second hand smoke causes lung cancer in dogs or any other animal for that matter. and truely it's not fair to blame your friend/co-worker for her dogs illness. i had a dog once that had bone cancer and it moved to her lungs. no second hand smoke involved. as far as putting the dog down. yes i feel bad for the dog but you have to take into consideration that it's extremely hard to put down one of your bestfriends. alot of people hold off and hope for a miracle that never comes. or they feel the decision is beyond them. it is not an easy decision and it's hard to let go. now i am not saying that the dog should be kept alive. as you say it's suffering and i would hope if i were in the same predicament someone would help me. i am just trying to say that it's hard to let go. i have seen more death than the average person and i know how hard it is for people. so please give your co worker some time. and also just because it is the belief of one vet that second hand smoke kills animals don't jump the gun and call it truth. it is not proven, in fact it is extremely far from it.

I doubt it, but it could irritate the lining in your throat and lungs. Don't worry about lead poisoning either, because "lead-pencils" no longer have any lead in them, it's graphite
2 :
Um, no. Lung cancer is associated with long-term exposure to carcinogens. As far as I know, graphite is not a carcinogen and breathing it in once won't have any effect on your health other than the initial coughing.

there are many lung cancer risk factors, if interested read this http://www.secretsofhealthylife.com/2010/02/lung-cancer-risk-factors.html

Can lung cancer be treated successfully if caught in the early stages

Can lung cancer be treated successfully if caught in the early stages?
Also, what are the early signs? I take it that's a no, with no replies. I thought not. I think it always leads to death eventually but drugs or ops just prolong life a bit.

Yes , it can. They can do several differnt treatments including removing a lung or part of one if necessaary. Lung Ca sym: shortness of breath, pain in the chest, mass on a xray, increase cough mucus, and sometime nothing. Usually found when someone comes in with pnuemonia, or having a hard time breathing
2 :
Lung cancer, if caught in the early stages, can be cured. It also depends on the type of cancer & if it has metastatic spread. Some cancers can be completely removed by surgery and usually with radiation & or chemo for follow up. If caught late it can be a prognosis of 3-6 months. Early signs include difficulty breathing, coughing up blood, weakness, fever, loss of appetite, and nausea & vomiting in later stages. Sometimes people get a progression of the signs and a "cold that won't go away". It's always better to see a MD for further tests like X-rays, CAT, or MRI. So your answer is, yes.
3 :
IT can, but it's very rare.... most people put off symptoms as a common cold or something like allergies or bronchitis.

if the cancer is in the lung then the person has a a lot better chance for cure then if it is spread to nearby lymph nodes. how long would it take to spread from the lung to the lymph nodes are we talking days, weeks, or months?

suggested that uses Chinese Chi Kung medical science to carry on the treatment to be possible to solve small cell lung cancer spreads.
2 :
small cell lung cancer spreads very, very fast. It is either designated as non extensive or extensive. If it is non extensive, believe it or not it usually is very suseptable to chemo and actually has a fairly good survival rate. My sister in law had it and she had had a chest xray two months before which was clear. She has been cancer free now for 2 years.

More women die of lung cancer or heart disease than breast cancer

More women die of lung cancer or heart disease than breast cancer?
So, why do they focus so much in those pink ribbons and breast cancer when the other diseases kill more women? I just think all these cancer awareness is just full of it. The are just looking for cure but not prevention when we know cancer is 5-10% passed in our genes the rest is natural cause. And we know our foods have something to do.

IDK but I do wish more attention would come to heart disease and lung disease. I am 33 5 ft 9 in tall 135 pounds. Eat healthy and excercise and I had a heart attack at age 29 and I now have COPD and have never smoked a day in my life. I know one of these 2 things will kill mme and it stinks cause I take very good care of myself.

It isn't the medical community that is focusing on breast cancer . . the breast cancer awareness campaign is fully in the private domain and funded by private organizations . . the breast cancer awareness came about because of Evelyn Lauder who had breast cancer about 30 years ago . . she is the founder of the cosmetic company Estee Lauder. She wanted to engage her company and businesses in bringing about breast cancer awareness using pink ribbons on her products . . which she did back in 1992 . . she openly promoted the idea to other businesses . . and along with the Susan Komen foundation established a strong and popular breast cancer awareness campaign that has grown throughout the years. It was not like this in the beginning . . trust me . .it has grown throughout the years. You have no idea what cancer was like in 1971 or why a 'war was declared' on the disease . . nor do you have any understanding that women were dying because no one wanted to say the word 'breast' out loud . . the early focus was on children with Leukemia and not on women or men with cancer. Most people just died anyway. But the issue of breast cancer, the idea that no one could say 'breast' on television or in public, and the fact that women were dying from the disease silently created a powerful grassroots movement and anger among women's groups. It didn't happen all at once . . it took years. Cancer is an ancient disease. It has nothing to do with food. No one knows what 'causes' one person to get cancer while someone else will not get it. It is rarely hereditary and other factors are considered 'risks' but do not tell the whole story since not everyone exposed to 'risks' ever develops cancer. There are absolutely no societies, groups or cultures in the world in which cancer is not present . . not one . . with over 200 different types of cancer you will find cancer in every single one. If there were such a group than it would be well documented . . and that evidence does not exist . .except in urban legend. Yes, cancer does has a lot to do with the food we eat. Did you know no cancer will ever form in your body where the enzymes are released from the pancreas into the duodenum (first section of the small intestine). Cancer cannot grow in an enzyme rich environment. Enzymes are present in raw uncooked foods like fruits and vegetables but are killed when exposed to heat. All cancer free societies around the world eat natural unprocessed healthy foods full of enzymes and are not exposed to the toxins we are exposed to. "Researchers found at an average of 91 "industrial compounds, pollutants and chemicals" in the blood and urine of nine volunteers and a total of 167 chemicals in the group. According to the research, conducted by Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York with the Environmental Working Group, "76 cause cancer in humans or animals, 94 are toxic to the brain or nervous system, and 79 cause birth defects or abnormal development." None of the people tested worked with chemicals or lived near an industrial facility." http://www.advancedhealthplan.com/toxicbody.html
4 :
Most lung cancers in women are preventable. NO ONE can protect you from breast cancer.
5 :
Because the data you are looking at is modern. The campaign has been quite effective in reducing the mortality of breast cancer due to screening and early detection. It was once far, far worse. Breast cancer also appears to be mostly genetic in origin. In contrast, most lung cancers are environmental, smoking.
6 :
I think it is because of how treatable breast cancer is caught early. If caught at stage 0 or 1, its almost always curable. And if regular check-ups starting at age 30 are conducted, breast cancer deaths could drop by a huge amount. That being said, you do have a point though. Because we could say the same thing about colon cancer, and a variety of other cancers also. Women have just been very effective at being vocal about breast cancer. Which is a good thing!
7 :
Why not. We know a lot more about what causes lung cancer and heart disease than we do with breast cancer. We have only spent a lot of money on breast cancer for about 10 years we have spent tons of money on heart disease for much longer (keep in mind that we still have a long way to go and money to spend on women's heart disease and treatment as it is not the same as men's). If you are not aware of it you can treat or cure it in time. I just went through prostate cancer surgery. I was lucky as everything and everybody said I didn't have cancer based on the normal procedures but I took it one step further and had a biopsy performed and they found cancer which I had to have surgically removed. A similar thing happened to my mother and the advancements then weren't as far as they are now and she died from it. So what is the cause there are a lot of things that need to be addressed to remove this or make more strides forward to helping women with this terrible disease. I hope this helps and you get yourself involved in solving the issue and not condemning what is being done. good luck

Hi Monica, a couple of good articles for you, http://www.webmd.com/diet/features/top-10-iron-rich-foods http://www.umm.edu/blood/aneiron.htm If you put some of the foods listed in an ingredients search on www.allrecipes.com you can probably come up with some really good recipes for her.

Go to this FREE website. They have lots of great info on it. http://savoirvegan.wordpress.com

Cream of wheat is a good one and easy to eat with good amount of Iron (when I was going through chemo could keep very little down but that worked) Apricot Nectar is another one that is good for building blood - it stimulates cell production Also look at iron pills - yes they cause constipation but they help
