Following a legal dispute with his sister-in-law, Havel decided to sell his 50% stake in the Lucerna Palace on Wenceslas Square, a legendary dance hall built by his grandfather Václav Havel. In a transaction arranged by Marián Čalfa, Havel sold the estate to Václav Junek, a former communist spy in France and leader of soon-to-be-bankrupt conglomerate Chemapol Group, who later openly admitted he bribed politicians of Czech Social Democratic Party.[9] In December 1996 the chain smoking Havel was diagnosed as having lung cancer.[10] The disease reappeared two years later. He later quit smoking. In 1996, Olga, beloved by the Czech people and his wife of 32 years died of cancer. Less than a year later Havel remarried, to actress Dagmar Veškrnová.[11] The former political prisoner was instrumental in enabling the transition of NATO from being an anti-Warsaw Pact alliance to its present inclusion of former-Warsaw Pact members, like the Czech Republic. In the interests of his country, he advocated vigorously for the expansion of the military alliance into Eastern Europe, including the Czech Republic.[12][13] Havel was re-elected president in 1998 and underwent a colostomy in Innsbruck when his colon ruptured while on holiday in Austria.[14] Havel left office after his second term as Czech president ended on February 2, 2003; Václav Klaus, one of his greatest political opponents, was elected his successor on February 28, 2003. Margaret Thatcher writes of the two men in her foreign policy treatise, Statecraft, reserving greater respect for Havel, whose dedication to democracy and defying the Communists earned her admiration.[15][16][17] 1st President of the Czech Republic In office February 2, 1993 – February 2, 2003

Regular cigarettes can cause lung cancer, but what about using marijuana

Regular cigarettes can cause lung cancer, but what about using marijuana?
It's used legally for medical reasons, but I've heard nothing as to the effect it has on the lungs. Is it worse or the same as cigarettes?

ive heard its either worse or the same.. but not better
2 :
smoking ONE joint is the same as smoking four or more cigarettes. so its FOUR TIMES as bad. don't do it. =)
3 :
I've heard the latest statistic suggesting that one joint is equal to 5 cigarettes. That doesn't say much about the size of the joint, or if you're smoking the whole thing all by yourself. I think they're probably equally damaging when you consider that cigarettes are chock full of harmul chemicals whereas marijuana is pretty "all natural." Even so, marijuana is very tarry and much stronger than cigarette smoke, causing most people to cough each time they inhale it. So, while it might be all natural, the smoke is probably just as, if not more damaging to the lungs.
4 :
I've heard it could be worse. But, just taking the smoke in can't be good.
5 :
Marijuana smoke has been found to contain more cancer-causing agents than is found in tobacco smoke. Examination of human lung tissue that had been exposed to marijuana smoke over a long period of time in a laboratory showed cellular changes called metaplasia that are considered precancerous. In laboratory test, the tars from marijuana smoke have produced tumors when applied to animal skin. These studies suggest that it is likely that marijuana may cause cancer if used for a number of years

Expiratory wheeze and asthma vis a vis lung cancer

Expiratory wheeze and asthma vis a vis lung cancer?
I'm 58 and fit but have some history of occasional bronchitis, and grandfathers who had TB. I have recently developed an expiratory wheeze that only occurs when laying in bed on my right side, and which appears to be in the left side of my lungs. Have an occasional dry cough too. Could this be asthma, or even a very early indication of lung cancer? Am not coughing up phlegm, and certainly no blood. In many clinical imaging situations, MRIs are much more informative than x rays; however, x rays seem to be consistently still used for checking out lung disorders - are they especially effective for this particular organ?

Might be COPD ?? Check with pulmanologist

There are several different diseases that could cause this symptom,ie pneumonia, congestive heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The only way to know for sure is to see your doctor and have lab tests and chest x-ray done.

What percentage of smokers actually get lung cancer

What percentage of smokers actually get lung cancer?
Based on these BS answers I say that smoking causes cancer is propaganda. So how many non smokers get lung cancer? Is tobacco smoke the only cancer causing agent in the air? And yes I have had a relative die of lung cancer. He smoked but he also worked in a shop and the fumes could have caused the cancer.

Most. The rest dye from complications of smoking. You should quit, and encourage your loved ones to quit as well.
3 :
Research shows that even among long-term, heavy smokers, the risk of getting lung cancer can vary dramatically -- from less than 1 percent to a whopping 15 percent. The risk of getting lung cancer was most heavily influenced by age, duration of smoking and how much a person smoked.
4 :
pretty much all eventually. it is the smoke that irritates the lung tissue and carries carcinogens. this causes cancer.
5 :
Idk but enough to make me not smoke.
6 :
i read 15 percent at this link http://www.lifeclinic.com/fullpage.aspx?prid=512291&type=1 and that was in 2003. that's 6 years ago. i wouldn't doubt if that has doubled or tripled since then. you should quit. I work in a medical clinic. i used to work in a Lung Specialist clinic... you don't want to end up there.
7 :
Even one percent is to much when it is someone you love and I do know it is a lot higher than that. It has taken more then one percent of the people I love who smoked, actually.
8 :
i think around 75%
9 :
To be able to answer that, we need accurate figures on how many people smoke. As it is we can only make educated guesses. What has been established is that 99% of people with small cell lung cancer and 80% of people with other forms of lung cancer are smokers or ex-smokers. Given that smoking also leads to emphasema, stroke, heart disease, other forms of cancer etc, it is worthbeing a non-smoker or ex-smoker and reducing your risk.
10 :
Now this is a tough one because you may not present with cancer as a direct link back to smoking. For example - someone could have quit ten years ago and yet the chemicals that were in the cigarettes you smoked have weakened the lungs and made them more likely to develop cancers and other serious lung problems such as COPD. Not cancer, but as deadly. So when you develop the cancer, you may longer be a smoker..... Also, what about those around you who are forced to smoke because then inhale your smoke? They can develop cancer too. However, taking all the above as exclusions, cold hard facts are: 30% of all cancer deaths are attributed to smoking 90% of all lung cancers can be directly attributed to smoking 114,000 people die in the UK each year as a direct result of cigarette smoking. It is the highest rate of preventable deaths in any group. Scary huh http://info.cancerresearchuk.org/cancerstats/types/lung/smoking/
11 :
Dana Reeves, Christopher Reeves widow died of lung cancer. she was a non smoker. As an ex-smoker, i can tell you that inhaling second hand smoke is for more dangerous than you think. when you inhale, you inhaling filtered smoke. second hand smoke is unfiltered. Genetics also play a factor. if a non smoking relative gets lung cancer chances are you could too. having said that there are lots of carcinogenic agents in the air, radon, nickel, benzene, arsenic, asbestos, the list goes on and on. but usually people think of smoking as the greatest cause of lung cancer.
12 :
142%

Cancer isn't "caused", it is "contributed to". We are constantly bombarded with carcinogens, some worse than others. That doesn't mean we'll get cancer, it just increases the odds of it. Throwing a handful of gravel at a target increases your odds of hitting it over throwing a few stones, but still doesn't guarantee a hit. By smoking, you're just increasing your odds. You may get lucky and never get it. Your relative was at a very high risk by smoking and the shop fumes, and that's how statistics work - increasing the probability of something happening means it is more likely but not assured to happen. Propaganda in favor of who? Tobacco generates massive amounts of tax revenue and is a staple industry in this country. Who stands to benefit from people smoking less? The medical insurance industry surely doesn't have the kind of lobbying money and influence that the tobacco industry has.
14 :
There is chemicals we breath in and food we eat every day that cause cancer more than smoking - Soya contains various toxic chemicals and giving it to babies is the same as giving them 5 birth control pills of oestrogen every day. Car exhaust fumes has a higher cancer causing chemical than smoking does, Radon Gases cause cancer, alcohol cause cancer, Pepsi and coca cola have chemicals that can destroy rust? Most food and confectionery contain E numbers, E131, 142, 210-217,230.239, can cause cancer, As for your original question I am not sure how many smokers get lung cancer but non smokers, although not as many as smokers can get lung cancer, smoking and all of the above don't just cause lung cancer, they can be the cause of several types of cancer, Google it and find out
15 :
The American Lung Association estimates roughly 90 %, the National Cancer Institute estimates 87%. Alas! I have a friend who was diagnosed with lung cancer and starts chemo tomorrow. She has smoked all her life, and she's in her early 40s now. Asbestos and other inhaled irritants account for more lung cancer. My mother was director of the local American Cancer Society for years, so I've grown up with statistics of this nature. No, it isn't propaganda, but I wish it was.

I have stage 4 metastatic lung cancer that has spread to both lungs and into my chest wall

I have stage 4 metastatic lung cancer that has spread to both lungs and into my chest wall?
I don't know if I should take the chemo. The doctor said that the chemo would help with pain. I feel good now but I know its spreading fast and the doc said I need to start chemo asap .I am in good health other then having stage 4cancer .I am unsure of what to do, anybody out there been through this or a loved one?

Stage 4 is too advanced to play around with. To not fight it now with the available tools and drugs is to give up. Fight hard, darlin'. Do the chemo, and also look into homeopathic remedies that you can do to supplement the drugs.
2 :
Always get treatment. It will help. I agree with whoever suggested homeopathics as well.
3 :
Take a day or two to read everything you can about it and look at alternative therapies for yourself as well. I've known some people to do very well on chemo without any side effects, and I know others who became very sick from it. Every person is different. Perhaps you could talk with someone who might better help you to make the decision. I've only seen advertisements during my local morning news, but these people seem to be on the right track. www.cancercenter.com/about-us.cfm
4 :
Take the chemo and then you must balance out if it is worthwhile or not. Chemo may add a few months and perhaps some comfort, then again it can destroy the remaining time you have left. Just give it a try.
5 :
Hi Michelle, I am sorry for your situation. I, too have stage iv lung cancer that has invaded my chest wall. I at first wasn't going to do chemo as they told me I would only be given palliative chemo and would only live perhaps a year. I was dx'd in May of 2006. The chemo was well tolerated by me and stopped the spread of the cancer for about a year, I then had another 6 rounds of chemo and altho it still didn't rid my body of the tumors, I am still alive and right now am on a watch and wait to see if the cancer starts growing again. I finished my last chemo in Dec., 2008. The choice is ultimately yours, but I feel I wouldn't have had these additional years if I did nothing. Best to you in your decision.
6 :
Michelle I am sorry for what you are going thru but please belive me that you never ever give up hope.Do whatever they are offering you and even ask if there are any clinical trials in your area that you qualify for.The answers you have recieved should give you hope that what they say WILL happen is a generalization and each individual person and result is unique. My girlfriend was told the same as you and she chose chemo and like another answerer 5 years later she has a terrific quality of life.GoodLuck and never ever give up hope.

What is the prognosis for a dog with metastatic lung cancer

What is the prognosis for a dog with metastatic lung cancer?
My dog was just diagnosed yesterday and I want to know how long she has.

Your dog is terminally ill, but her expected time remaining is difficult to gaauge. It depends upon the extent of the cancer's spread, the rate of spread, her responsiveness to any treatment being given, and her overall health. So long as she is kept comfortable with pain medication, then she may continue to enjoy her life with you. However, at some point her illness will shut down her organ functions, so you must be prepared for when that eventually happens. Sorry for your pet's troubles.
2 :
Hi, Dog's cancer also known as Canine lymphoma. Mostly chemotherapy will be applied to treat it. This website provided more information about canine lymphoma. http://canine-lymphoma.blogspot.com/ Thanks Narza

Compounds found in cruciferous vegetables like cauliflower, broccoli, and watercress have been shown to halt the progression of lung cancer in both human and animal studies. Also, studies show that turmeric may inhibit the growth of and induce apoptosis in non-small cell lung cancer.
2 :
Breakfast Berries, Yogurt and Green Tea Blueberries are believed to be one of the most powerful antioxidants; they also contain ellagic acid, which prevents carcinogens from latching onto your DNA. Yogurt contains the healthy bacteria lactobacilli, which stops enzymes that turn healthy cells into cancer. Green tea is another powerful antioxidant that you should be drinking at least once a day. Lunch Tempeh with Rainbow Chard, Tomatoes and Flaxseed Tempeh is packed with isoflavones, a plant-based estrogen that mimics estrogen found in animals and humans. A diet rich in isoflavones could be more impactful for women who have less natural estrogen (i.e., post-menopausal.) It's important to understand that isoflavones can help reduce estrogen-induced cancers by blocking our natural estrogen. The same chemicals that give rainbow chard its color are also powerful immune boosters. Tomatoes are one of the world's most concentrated sources of lycopene, which prevents cancer cells from growing and dividing. They are best absorbed if cooked with a bit of olive oil. Flaxseeds contain lignans that block natural estrogen, which can feed certain cancers like breast and ovarian. Dinner Quinoa with Roasted Vegetables and Curried Beans From Peru in the Andes, quinoa is a whole grain rich in fiber and antioxidants. Fiber stimulates the good bacteria in your colon to produce cancer-fighting compounds; it also lowers your risk for cancer by sweeping carcinogens through your colon. Garlic and onions, from a family of vegetables called allium, are powerful cancer-fighters. Studies have shown them to stop cancer growth in the stomach, colon, brain, lung, prostate and breasts. Additionally, one garlic component named diallyl disulfide was shown to kill Leukemia cells in the lab. Other cancer-fighting vegetables in this dish are packed with antioxidants are carrots, sweet potatoes and squash. Broccoli detoxes the liver, beans are rich in fiber and the tumeric in curry

I don’t think that food can combat cancer and I don’t think I ever heard any researches saying something like that. What I know is that food can PREVENT certain type of cancer and MINIMIZE their process but no COMBAT, you should stick with your doctor’s treatment and try eating health; green vegetables, tomatoes lots of water and a good night of sleep, but remember food also has chemical that can be fatal to our system as well. So don’t believe in everything you read or hear. Your doctor is still the best one to help you.
