Would smoking hooka once every one or two months cause me to have lung cancer?
Or would I have to smoke daily to get it. I don't smoke weed from a hookah I only smoke tobbacco from it.

What are you smoking? Many things can be smoked in a hookah. Grass? Cancer is the least of your worries. Grass causes paranoia, hallucinations, that can last years after you have quit smoking. Teens who smoke grass have a 4 X greater chance of developing schizophrenia. It is addictive. Once a month will soon become 6 times a day. Think about it.
2 :
Cancers that are closely linked to certain behaviors are the easiest to prevent. If you are a current tobacco user, quitting can still greatly reduce your chances of getting cancer. The most important preventive measure you can take to avoid lung cancer is to quit smoking. Many products such as nicotine gum, nicotine sprays, nicotine inhalers have been successfully used to help people trying to quit smoking. What is the cause of lung cancer : 1. A person who smokes more than one pack of cigarettes per day has a risk of developing lung cancer 20-25 times greater than someone who has never smoked. 2. Cigar and pipe smoking increases the risk of lung cancer but not as much as smoking cigarettes. 3. Asbestos fibers are silicate fibers that can persist for a lifetime in lung tissue following exposure to asbestos. The workplace is a common source of exposure to asbestos fibers. 4. Radon gas is a natural chemically inert gas that is a natural decay product of uranium. With an estimated 12% of lung-cancer deaths attributable to radon gas. 5. Air pollution from vehicles, industry, and power plants can raise the likelihood of developing lung cancer in exposed individuals

I also have issues with lung cancer. I posted my question on wish123 and got an answer from an expert who solved my problem. Highly recommend the website.

how long does lung cancer take to develope

how long does lung cancer take to develope?
My mom smokes like every 15 mins. She'd always hang around me while we're smoking, whether it's in the house, outside in public, friend's house, whatever. It has been like this for thirteen years.. and I'm really really paranoid since I live in Las Vegas (people everywhere smoke.. dare I say, even a lot of the kids at my school). If I do die, I really dont want it to be from some stupid disease that was caused by people around me.

Try to get her to smoke outside. It's not like it's cold there. I smoke, but I go outside because I don't want to do it in front of my daughter. Try to stay clear from the 2nd hand smoke.
2 :
unfortunatly passive smoking can be more harmfull than regular smoking because the filter protects the smoker to a degree. I would become really asertive and if people are soming around you, like you mum, ask them to stop. if you don't know them move away. If you are in a public place like the movies or a restraunt, complain to the managers. the only way smoking is still socially acceptable is because we let it be. ( Just a little aside note, recently, in my home state (tasmainia Australia) smoking was banned in all public places and life is so much better! if people say they will loose buisness, let them know about this - before the ban, the buisest clubs were the ones that banned smoking!)

Have any studies been done regarding the frequency of lung cancer in musicians who play wind instruments vs.?
the general poplulation? Smokers and non smokers? Would there be a possible correlation between playing a wind instrument and a reduced risk of lung cancer? Would playing a wind instrument help keep the lungs clean? Or would playing a wind instrument have no effects on ones risk of having lung cancer? Thanks
Medicine - 2 Answers

1 :
I thought your question was interesting (I am a wind musician) so I researched it. I found one article that suggested a connection, but it was only based on an observation of two wind musicians and former smokers with lung cancer. The authors supposed that this was due to the large amounts of air being breathed in, increasing exposure to toxins in the air. This was the only mention I saw in a brief search. This is a question that appears to be untested, largely because there are few wind musicians who smoke. A serious musician would hopefully avoid smoking.

I can't paste the direct link to PubMed, but it is free if you register as a student: Occup Environ Med. 2003 Feb ;60 (2):143 12554845 Musicians playing wind instruments and risk of lung cancer: is there an association? When you have throat cancer or lung cancer

When you have throat cancer or lung cancer?
Is the pain continuous meaning it doesn't go away or does it just come and go?
Cancer - 2 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
There were no symptoms in the beginning. My father had lung cancer and he died last 2007. We first saw a 'pimple' on his face and we thought it was just normal until we find it growing. He was strong and active then. Not feeling any discomfort. We had that lump removed and test. A week after, my father collapsed. Had series of test and found he got tuberculosis. Strange as he wasn't coughing prior to that lump removal. After more tests, we found out he got waters in his lungs. Then they found more lumps on his shoulder. Tumor has metastasize and spread up to his liver. It was a stage 3 leading to 4 cancer. Very fast. If you feel any discomfort now, go and have a doctor check you. Whatever causing small pain, you need to know the cause. Prevention is better than cure.
2 :
When my dad had lung cancer he had no pain, just a slight cough that didn't go away, he had part of his lung removed and recovered from lung cancer - 3 years later he died of bowel cancer after being unwell and sick for 6 weeks. My friend died of throat cancer several years ago, it started with a sore throat and after a few weeks she found it hard to swallow, she died 5 months later of oesophagus cancer aged 42.

Do you have the same sympathy towards two 65 yr olds with lung cancer

Do you have the same sympathy towards two 65 yr olds with lung cancer?
Person A - worked as a carpenter 50hrs a week for 45 years to support his family, sometime coming into contact with carcinogenic materials (ex. asbestos) Person B - a person who worked an office job but smoked 3 packs of cigarettes a day for 45 yrs Do you have any different feelings about them in general?
Gender Studies - 15 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Of course. The second could have prevented his (foreseeable) consequences.
2 :
My grandmother died of lung cancer from smoking, and I sobbed my heart out at her funeral. It was horrible seeing her deteriorate and then die. Not once did I think "it served her right". We all have to go sometime, and something is going to get us in the end.
3 :
i have sympathy for person A as they never intended to get lung cancer, but smoking on purpose is asking for it. its like who would you have sympathy for, someone who got stabbed....or someone who stabbed themselves
4 :
Yes. Just like there's a difference between getting killed by a stray bullet or being killed in a gang fight. Person A was a victim of poor working conditions and person B did it to themselves.
5 :
No. I wouldn't judge the second one if that's what you mean. I would feel awful for both of them. Judging takes too much energy and would compromise my fave quality in people and myself which is *compassion* If someone jumped off a bridge or fell off the same bridge the end result is the same: save them if you can.
6 :
I don't feel any less sympathy for the cigarette smoker simply because most of us have some vice that increases the likelihood of having disease. Consider the case with obesity. We know that obesity increases the risk of getting certain cancers, but I don't have any less sympathy for people who eat chocolate cake and get fat, likewise I don't feel any less sympathy for the smoker who gets lung cancer. Small cell lung cancer is a miserable thing, and I have profound sympathy for anyone afflicted with this disease and for their families.
7 :
Yes. Person A got his illness by accident. Person B brought it upon himself (herself).
8 :
Assuming I know neither one, I have equal sympathy. Lung cancer is a hard and painful death. It's stupid to start smoking and quitting is the hardest thing I have ever had to do in my life.
9 :
Well it depends on their situations. I tend to think that the carpenter was poor and struggling to provide for his family, so he might not have had any choice but to work in places where he had to come in contact with carcinogenic materials. On the other hand, we don't know Person B's situation. Maybe their life was miserable through no fault of their own and they used smoking as an escape. Not the best escape, but some people do use it for that. My gut instinct is to say I feel more sorry for Person A, but it all depends on the situation.
10 :
Yes, I have the same sympathy. When you get to an age that you've actually been around death a fair bit, it's hard to be as judgmental as you invite us to be. Most of us don't have perfect health habits and if a person really wants to avoid carcinogens, they can avoid asbestos as well as cigarettes, the sun, and so much more. Most of us don't do everything we can, a very significant proportion of lung cancer occurs in non-smokers who haven't been exposed to asbestos, and medically speaking, you can't even tell if smoking or asbestos caused either cancer. So the bottom line to me is sympathy for those who are ill. Is there some analogy here about gender issues?
11 :
yes I pitty both their life styles! over worked is person a and over stressed is person b but what about the person who never smoked and was never around asbestos who ended up with lung cancer?
12 :
I have sympathy towards the carpenter, because it is not his fault he worked in dangerous conditions. The second guy is a moron who could have prevented his health problems
13 :
Person B brought that on themselves knowing what would happen if they didn't stop smoking. Carpenters usually wear masks, so not only are they trying to prevent lung cancer and taking precautions, it's their job.
14 :
Yes, I feel the same amount of sympathy for both. The one who didn't smoke but accidentally came in contact with carcinogenic materials is unfortunate. But I used to smoke myself, so I can't fault someone for smoking. That would be hypocritical. So yes, I feel the same for both.
15 :
My grandparents both died from smoking related health problems, and I had a lot of sympathy. They started smoking when they were kids, and didn't understand as well as people do now what cigarettes can do to a person, and by the time they were adults, they were powerfully hooked. They just never managed to both quit. Even today, most smokers started when they were young teenagers. So, while I think people shouldn't start smoking, and ought to try to quit if they are already smokers, I have a lot of sympathy for people who started when they were young and impulsive, and could never kick the habit. I did a lot of stupid things when I was a teenager, though smoking wasn't one of them, and I suspect most other people did as well. That said, maybe I do have a little extra sympathy for person A, but I have a lot of sympathy for both of them.

if weed has tar, which i know it does, than why cant you get lung cancer from smoking weed

if weed has tar, which i know it does, than why cant you get lung cancer from smoking weed?
I know for a fact that weed has more tar than cigarettes. I also know that tar is a major reason for lung cancer... so why is it that no one has ever gotten lung cancer from smoking weed
Cancer - 4 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
because cigarettes have more than just tar in them
2 :
Where did you get the information that you can't get cancer from weed? You inhale deeper, longer and you get higher when you cough like crazy. Of course you can get cancer from smoking weed! Many Many people have cancer from smoking nothing but "weed". It is not as openly discussed because it is an illegal substance.
3 :
Research is continuing . . but currently marijuana use places males at a higher risk for developing testicular cancer: Association of marijuana use and the incidence of testicular germ cell tumors. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19204904 There is also ongoing research that has linked smoking marijuana to damaging DNA that leads to the risk of developing cancer: Marijuana Damages DNA And May Cause Cancer, New Test Reveals http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/06/090615095940.htm Smoking this substance may place you at a higher risk for developing cancer.
4 :
There are countless carcinogens in cigarette smoke. As far as I'm aware, tar isn't one of them - it's an irritant. Those who smoke cigarettes may develop a regular cough. Those who smoke cannabis may develop a similar cough as the body tries to remove the tar that has accumulated in the lungs. One thing that I think everyone would agree on, is that there hasn't been enough research undertaken concerning the smoking of cannabis.

2 :
Your question sounded reasonable until you got to the Palin drivel. I'm gone.
3 :
Of course they do! And little do they understand that the "death panels" exist right now - and someone profits from that decision as opposed to a government employee making the decision for no extra monetary gain. But again, that could never exist in the private sector, right??
4 :
I agree Hospice is a great program for the person dying and their family been there done that and yes I think Palin considers them a death panel
5 :
Hospice is a voluntary program , and I am sure Palin supports it, it is a limited program, I know I was just released from it as I out lived it.It is only 6 months, I was in it for 6 months, and released last week. My insurance company paid for it as well, they would have extended it, however the hospital Iuse does not go beyond the six month limit. They are also very expensive 6K a mnth is what they billed my insurance

There are more variables to this question than you might think. That's why statistics aren't always accurate. Ex: Did you know that France, where 1/3 of all adults are smokers, have the lowest cancer rate in the West? How could this be? By no means condoning smoking. Just wanted you to consider this fact, too.
4 :
Ironically, not as many as people that are exposed to second hand smoke for 8 hours or more a day-- like people who work in bars and don't smoke. Your lungs may be bad but to a nonsmoker, that smoke is toxic and causes more irritation to a nonsmoker than a veteran smoker of 10 years--- don't get me wrong here, you still have a high incidence of dying from smoking, but it depends on how many years, how many packs a day, and how old you are now- and did you know that if you quit today in one year you lungs will look as good as new?....it's true- ask a doctor...............

i think you should get a portrait of her...
3 :
Go to your tattoo artist. They have the best ideas.
4 :
if she had a favorite quote you could get that, or if she had a favorite author, get a quote that they say. see what year she was born in and you could get the zodiac animal.
5 :
Did she have any hobbies? Perhaps if she liked to knit, you could get knitting needles. If she liked to garden, you could get flowers she planted. If she was always cooking, you could get a rolling pin. With memorial tattoos, it doesn't have to be literal. It can be something that means a lot between you to and will remind you of her, without having just a name and a heart.
6 :
why do u want to to put tattoo for that? is there is any use of it? just go hospitals or any other orphanage and serve people with same disease which ur grandma had or anyone.. when u get time... rather then spending money on tattoo help some one with that.... ur grandma will surely feel happy.. it is just a honest opinion....

As an ex-smoker, what are the chances of dying from lung cancer. And should we get tested more often afterward

As an ex-smoker, what are the chances of dying from lung cancer. And should we get tested more often afterward?
I smoked for 21 years. You would think there was a need for a long term ex smoker to see how the lungs are holding up aferwards...but you never hear about follow-up health checks.
Respiratory Diseases - 4 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
People who have never smoked a drag in their life may die from lung cancer. People who smoke like chimneys from childhood until their senior years, may not develop or die from lung cancer. There are no guarantees...smoking simply increases your risks of lung issues and some other health problems. Quitting sees the risk of those things go down somewhat, but unless you are quite for many years, your risk remains higher than someone who has never smoked (and has no other predispositions to those issues). When you go for your yearly physical, talk to your doctor about wanting to know the condition of your lungs and if they are improving after quitting.
2 :
I think you can get a chest X-ray to show if their has been any scarring in your lungs but I have heard some figures that may give you hope. Supposedly if you stop smoking you get back around 75% of your lung capacity. If you want to increase your lung capacity even more start running, you may need to watch your weight more since you no longer have the nicotine in your body.
3 :
There is some testing ongoing to see if scans are a useful screening tool. To date, getting CT scans has not been shown to improve survival. You just have to hope you are lucky. I too smoked for 25 years. The scans I had for breast cancer showed some tiny lung nodules, but evidently these are pretty common. That's the problem with using highly sensitive scans as screening tools. They reveal all kinds of "internal freckles" that must then be followed or tested further to make sure they aren't malignant. The vast majority are not. So ... in short, there is currently no screening test for smokers or ex-smokers that has shown to have any benefit to their survival.
4 :
How many packs did you smoke a day over those 21 years? 1 Pack a day for 1 year = 1 Pack-year 2 Packs a day for 1 year = 2 Pack-years etc Doctors ignore the fact that you have ever smoked unless you have more than 20 Pack-years.

just an idea; have your main character with other siblings (if there are any) and have one of those before-death talks that you see in the movies. then, the mother coughs continously and the child(ren) are ushered out of the room as doctors and nurses rush in. throw in some dialogue with a doctor or something and then do a flatliner. just a thought....
2 :
well sometimes cancer is hereditary(passed through the family) so you don't necessarily have to be a smoker. the lungs can start to weaken and the disease can spread through the blood till its ruled as blood cancer and effects the whole body. lung cancer, your lungs can start to bleed and flood, leading to suffocation and death. my dad passed of stomach, blood, and bone cancer so i know what it can do to a person. with lung cancer, your lungs can burn, ache, and you can cough up blood constantly. since your lungs are weak, they cant filter out most bacteria, so you may be sick with colds or flus often. hope i helped. =)
3 :
like "gamer" said Have it in hushed tones. The children right theyre she could hand a daughter a necklace or something then dockters could rush in (the eldest might have called in advanced) and then have them rush the children out. they try giving her some antibiotics or medication but all odds fail she just dies no sudden rath of pain or anything then the eldest child sits and mourns while the youngest plays not realizing anything any middle-aged childern cry.

This is your character and you want us to explain how dies? No one knows what causes cancer – any kind of cancer. When a doctor tells the patient’s family the patient died they do not go into details. When people die from lung cancer or most other diseases it is usually due to heart failure.
2 :
well, there are a lot of things that can bring on death, unfortunately. a build up of fluid around the lungs, called pleural effusions, can overwhelm the system and cause heart failure and respiratory failure. pneumonia is common, and the person's system is just overwhelmed. yes, smoking is the most likely factor, but there are people who don't smoke. waitresses who worked in smoky environments are at risk, for example.

What are the symptoms of Lung Cancer?
Hello, my dad had a cold/flu (not swine flu) for a week and a half. I'm probably sure that his cold is gone (maybe not) but he keeps on coughing like every last 5 seconds... (Dad's a smoker). Is there a probabality that he got Lung Cancer? I'm really worried.. My dad smokes like 4 or 5 cigars a day.. not the whole pack though...

One symptom is the finger tips bulging over the tops of the fingernails. Get him to go to a raw food diet for 6 weeks. Let him still smoke! Just switch to raw food only.
2 :
Primary care physicians probably see hundreds of patients with a coughs for each person they find with one of the types of lung carcinoma. You cannot go by the symtoms - cough, coughing up blood, ect. - since they are non-specific. His doctor - who knows the entire medical history and can examine you dad - will decide if a chest x-ray is indicated. We don't even know his age. Only 3% of lung cancers occur in people under 45 years of age. 4-5 cigars each day is not as risky for lung cancers as chronic cigarette smoking.
3 :
that's not too much... i don't want to make assumptions... for your benefit... please let him see a doctor... for assurance... in my opinion... he just have cough... dry cough... (= try making him stop smoking... that would be nice... (= groups.yahoo.com/group/souper_street

How long does a person usally live when there in stage 4 of lung cancer?

Cancer - 13 Answers

1 :
possibly a few months at most
2 :
Impossible to determine. Doctors have given some people up for death years ago, and some are still alive today without any treatment. It is in God's hands.
3 :
iam working on the antidote as we speak.. i know i can do it, i will not fail, this is my duty. this is where i belong.
4 :
unfortunatley not very long but it depends on the patient It's usually fatal at this stage due to Metasisis to the lymph nodes and other organs Still always hope though I'll say a prayer for whoever is involved
5 :
http://www.cancerhelp.org.uk/help/default.asp?page=6747 Try that website. It varies from person to person and it all depends on many different factors.
6 :
That's a question that only the doctor can answer. Stage 4 doesn't always mean a death sentence. It depends upon the type of lung cancer and the type of treatment the patient is receiving.
7 :
6 months - 5 years.
8 :
Anywhere from as low as 3 months to the least likely 2 years. Depends of areas of METS and whether the approach is aggressive or conservative.
9 :
My friend was in stage 4, She was diagnosed on the 3rd of Aug. and she died the 23th of Oct. My friend was told 3 - 6 months. Her cancer was very agressive. The cancer spread to other areas of her body and she ultimately died from brain cancer before the lung cancer got to her.
10 :
wow sorry to hear that :( I've said a prayer for you.
11 :
depends how aggressive is and what symptoms they have.. It kinda like how long is a piece of string??
12 :
My dad was diagnosed at stage 4 lung cancer and he was with us for just 8 weeks :( but everyone is different and i hear of ppl with same situation living for 6-12 months
13 :
Without treatment, likely a few months, depending on many factors. With treatment, median (not average) survival is 7.9 months; 1/3 of patients alive at one year; 1 out of 10 alive at 2 years.

Possibility of lung cancer from secondhand smoke

Possibility of lung cancer from secondhand smoke?
I just really noticed all the smoking around me a few days ago while I was at an airport. I live in Bogota,Colombia and people here like to smoke a lot. I was wondering if I inhale secondhand smoke on a common basis if there is a possibility of me getting lung cancer
Cancer - 5 Answers

1 :
Many people will say that you will. But I am a survivor of living around cigarette smoke all of my childhood, and my mother did also, as did my children......none of us has lung cancer YET. I do remember when I was little that my dad's cigarette bothered me when the burn-tip smoke got into my eyes and nose. You have to see if the smoke bothers you. If it does, that could be a warning for you.
2 :
Passive smoking is seconhand smoking. inhaling smoke from "secondhand" is almost as bad as smoking itself. If you are in a smoke filled room for 1 hour with smokers, it is equal to smoking 10 cigarettes. there are many types of cancers that can come from secondhand smoke. Out of all of the lung cancer deaths reported, nearly 40% of them were from smoking and secondhand smoke. Smoking the cigarette you are getting the filtered smoke, but secondhand smoke you are getting the "sidestream" and "mainstream" smoke. this means you are breathing in what the smoker is exhaling out, and what is burning off the cigarette

If stage 4 lung cancer spreads to the bones, how long will a person live

If stage 4 lung cancer spreads to the bones, how long will a person live?
How many months or years do I have left?

Did you talk to your doctor about this? Are you on radiation/chemo? You could go tomorrow or 5 yrs from now. It depends on how aggressive the cancer is. there is no real answer for you. Sorry.
2 :
There are new drugs for Stage 4 Cancers which have been proven very effective in slowing the spread. No one can give you a definite "time frame"
3 :
As a Registered Nurse, it would be unethical for me to lie to you, or to give you false hope. Over 95% of all lung cancer patients die within 5 years of the date of the diagnosis. This is because it is usually diagnosed at advanced stages. The other reason is that all of your blood passes through the lungs to be oxygenated, the heart sends the oxygen-rich blood to the rest of your body and some of the cancer cells travel along and implant themselves in other body organs and/or tissues such as bone marrow forming new malignant growths {this is a process known as metastases}. You'll have to discuss your particular case with your attending Oncologist. If you are not satisfied with the treatment you are receiving get a second medical opinion. Seek support in peer group meetings.Talk to your priest/minister/rabbi/shaman or the leader or whatever your religious faith is. Hope my advice has been of help.

Feeling really paranoid. What are the chances of having lung cancer at 19

Feeling really paranoid. What are the chances of having lung cancer at 19?
I am 19 and have been smoking about half a pack a day for the past year. Don't know why, but I have been feeling extremely paranoid. I had a chest x ray done last tuesday and the doctor said my lungs were clear...could they have missed it??
Cancer - 8 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Quit smoking, you are lung cancer waiting to happen. You probably don't have it this time but next time yo may not be so lucky. Lung Cancer is a horrible way to die.
2 :
If the xray is clear you should be fine. It is unlikely you would have cancer, but you shouldn't be smoking.
3 :
The chance for you to get lung cancer at the age 19 is rare. It is just anxiety about your health. My husband has the same anxiety about his health. I also smoke a pack and a half for about 2 years now and I am fine. My mom has been smoking since she was like 15 and she is almost 50 now still smoking and she is healthy. If they have already done chest xrays I am pretty sure they would have seen something if there was anything. If you still aren't sure go back and get another one done so that way you can feel better.
4 :
Smoking is injurious to Ur health. If U stop smoking instantaneously, the chances of acquiring lung cancer shall get minimized. Good luck.
5 :
I was literally just informed about an hour ago that my grandmother will not live to see the rest of this week. She is dying of lung cancer that has now spread throughout her entire body. She was a smoker. You should quit. Do it for your dear life and your loved ones.
6 :
Pretty close to zero at 19. Maybe 20% lifetime if you keep it up.
7 :
NO..they can't "Miss" it. Your lungs take a LONG Time to develop Lung Cancer. Stop smoking if you are so paranoid! My Husband's Aunt is 75 years old, and she smokes 3 Packs A DAY....and her lungs are blacker than the night! She had brain cancer once and the doctors said her lungs looked worse than her BRAIN. SHE Has been smoking since she was a teenager. Stop now, and you won't have that problem or worry.
8 :
The chance is zip, it takes a *lot* longer than that for smoking to cause cancer. Check back when you're in your 50's.

Can I get lung cancer by smoking Doritos?
I was bore and always wanted to try smoking doritos. Now I'm worry about getting cancer.I crush the nacho cheese Doritos and wrap it in a paper and it tasted like shit!
Cancer - 5 Answers

1 :
Doritos do not contain Carcinogens which cause cancer so it is impossible for you to get cancer from smoking doritos.
2 :
Well I dont know if it would cause cancer but i really dont recommend doing it. Any type of smoke inhaled into your lungs can eventually give you lung problems.
3 :
Why would you do that?
4 :
i hope u got a buzz & no sore throat. don't worry re: cancer. lol
5 :
Probably but we won't know for about 25 years.

Can anyone show me a person who has gotten lung cancer only from marijuana

Can anyone show me a person who has gotten lung cancer only from marijuana?
best answerer: many people have been outspoken on the dangers of Cocaine and been very transparent about their use. yet where are all the users of marijuana coming out and saying its bad for you? there aren't any. its all government and commercials. Islam: then show me the correlation.

Doesn't exist.
2 :
Like alcohol prohibition in the 1920s, "trying" to make marijuana illegal has failed completely in the US ! Legal or not, MANY people are using it. The only people benefiting are criminals, artificially raising prices, and making for an unsafe situation as criminals become wealthier and more empowered. Also, our prisons are full of people who have committed marginal offenses (such as possession of MJ) because "Conservatives" believe they can legislate morality. Alcohol causes many more deaths per year than MJ; if MJ is illegal, alcohol should also be illegal (you can't have it both ways, Cons !) Legalizing and TAXING MJ, just like alcohol, would give much-needed revenue to governments who are in dire need of funds, put many criminals out of business, and free our prison and court systems for serious criminals. If you agree, WRITE YOUR ELECTED OFFICIALS. If you don't know who they are, use http://www.congress.org and enter your ZIP. Also, if you agree, do NOT vote Republican.
3 :
Not likely, because people usually smoke cigarettes before moving on to other things. The true gateway drug according to research is cigarettes not marijuana.
4 :
Even so, it's advisable to smoke weed from a vaporizor to minimize damage, especially if you already smoke cigarettes.
5 :
It MAY have happened at some point but alcohol and tobacco are far worse than any amount of marijuana. We would be far better to just legalize it and move on...
6 :
That's not the way it works. Nobody can show you someone who contracted lung cancer and positively attribute it to cigarettes, either. All we can do is show a correlation between smoking and increased incidence of lung cancer. That being said, you can't POSSIBLY believe smoking anything is either good for you or even a neutral, can you? The human lung was not meant to inhale burning gasses, especially when some of those gasses have been shown to be carcinogenic. Before you call me a fascist, know that I have been known to smoke a bowl or two in my time, but come on...spreading pro-weed propaganda is every bit as detrimental to finding the truth as is spreading anti-weed propaganda.
7 :
it neva happened.
8 :
Ok.
9 :
You can get lung cancer from anything.
10 :
studies so far show no correlation. Whats troubling though, is that marijuana smoke contains the same chemicals linked to lung cancer in tobacco smoke, as well as independent from tobacco. That combined with the fact that the studies i have seen on it limit the age to those under 60, I would say that its only because most people dont smoke enough marijuana to get cancer from it. I support marijuana, but I am quite against smoking it. Vaping is better, though the chemicals are still there, but at significantly lower levels. Cooking in food is far better, or making tinctures and extracts.

What percent of serious smokers end up dying of lung cancer and other smoking related diseases

What percent of serious smokers end up dying of lung cancer and other smoking related diseases?

This is always a good question. About half of long term smokers die from this addiction - either from cancers of the lung, mouth, throat, esophagus, stomach, bladder, etc. - or from heart disease, chronic lung disease, peripheral vascular disease, et al. Everyone knows someone who has lived to be 90 and smoked for decades. Some people get away with it - but many do not. More people die from lung cancer than any other type of cancer. In 2004 - lung cancer killed more people than breast cancer, prostate cancer, and colon cancer combined. Lung cancer accounts for 31% of all deaths from cancer, and 90% of these could have been prevented if people had not smoked cigarettes. In 2004, 108,355 men and 87,897 women were diagnosed with lung cancer - - - 89,575 men and 68,431 women died from lung cancer † Bottom line – Most cannot be cured Estimates for 2008 215,020 new cases of lung cancer 114,690 men and 100,330 women in the U.S. 60% of people diagnosed with either type of lung cancer (non-small cell or small cell) are dead in 1 year. 73% are dead by 2 years. 1 in 7 people diagnosed with lung cancer survive 5 years – most of those who are cured are cured with initial surgery - - not with chemotherapy. Male smokers - lifetime risk of lung cancer is 1 in 6 Female smokers – the risk of lung cancer is 1 in 9 Risk of lung cancer in non-smokers is 1 in 77 Can J Public Health. 1994 Nov-Dec;85(6):385-8. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7895211

how does lung cancer affect the respiratory/skeletal system if it spreads there

how does lung cancer affect the respiratory/skeletal system if it spreads there?
Can it affect any other human systems?

1 :
The most common secondary site for lung cancer are the bones and the brain. Metasteses in bone increase likelihood of fracture and non-union of fractures, and of course severe bone pain (usually most evident in hips and spine). Secondary cancer in the brain can cause a range of symptoms, usually affecting balance, paralysis or altered sensation on one side of the body etc. Lung cancer will affect respiratory function by decreasing the amount of oxygen in the bloodstream which leads to excessive carbon dioxide levels.
2 :
Cancer sorta eats at and caused decay and malfunction in whatever part of the body it attacks. It has a tendacy to spread to other body parts also. It is not contagious to others by touching that person--if this is your second question.
3 :
my mom has stage 4 lung cancer. about 2 months ago, the tumor in her left lung pressed on her airway, causing her to feel like she was suffocating, and also collapsed her right lung. she has been having radiation to break up the tumor. she's breathing better, but it could happen again. as for the skeletal system? yeah, her cancer has been metasticized to her bones since she was diagnosed back in october 2007. she's been in horrible pain for the past 3 weeks, with no end in sight. they're doing radiation for it, but it's a slow, arduous procedure.
4 :
my mum has recently been diagnosed with lung cancer and she has four secondary tumours, three in her brain and one on her kidney. Lung cancer is like a tree with roots and it tends to branch out and grow both up and down. It is very common for lung cancer to spread to the brain especially and in most cases at some point it will spread to some other part of the body (unless caught extremely early and successfully treated).

my father had small cell lung cancer. the doctors said it was the fastest of the two. he tried chemo but did not do it for long because the dr's said it wasn't helping. he passed away 5 months after his diagnosis. we kept our faith the entire time. my best advice to you is pray for your mother, yourself and your family. miracles can happen and God never gives you more than you can handle. enjoy your mother and take lots of pictures. hold her hands in yours and talk about your childhood and hers too. kiss her cheek every chance you get. smell the sweet scent of her hair. and if its the Lords will that she makes it , then the two of you will be so close after this obstacle that you will be thankful for the opportunity to get to know each other so much better. and the best advice i can give is to stay positive. if you let fear overwhelm you then it will take over the situation. Good luck to you Darlene, and may God bless you and your Mom

This kind you ask about I hear it's not good! If it's large cell there is no treatment right now. I have small cell myself and survival is 50-50 that I'll live until I am in my 80s I am 52 now
3 :
unfortunatley this cancer is a very aggressive and a rapid spreading one, my dad passed away in May with this type of cancer he was diagnosed on 4th Feb and died 4th may, in answer to your question i think there is no 'set' survival rate.
4 :
According to a study by Dr. Tan, median survival for patients with malignant mesothelioma is 11 months. It is almost always fatal. Median survival based on histologic type is 9.4 months for sarcomatous, 12.5 months for epithelial, and 11 months for mixed. Approximately 15% of patients have an indolent course. His study seems to parallel others with the same result. This type of cancer normally has a bad outcome regardless of the type of treatments administered.

Ever since I was a kid, whenever I got coughs they are 'bad' ones.Am I more likely to get lung cancer?
I am in my 20s, a non smoker (though my parents smoked). I don't get coughs often, but when i do, I get hacking and tickling coughs. And they seem to last alot longer than my husbands. I am worried this might mean I am 'prone' to lung cancer? Can't find anything on this online. I've had chest xrays before and they are clear.

I get funky coughs and been around smokers all my life, but never had been told there is a risk of lung cancer. If you have had chest x rays, that should help you to relax about it, but if you are really concerned, which I can understand, then you really need to speak with your doctor.
2 :
A side-stream smoker has more risk of developing lung-cancer than the smoker himself. That's what I learn. If you're still worried,go and see a doctor. That's the best to do. Best of luck to you.
3 :
your throat and lungs are more sensitive-too much smoke from parents. do you take cough medicine/cough medicine w/expectorant? does it help? Are you allergic to something that makes you cough? Have you asked doctor about trying asthma medicine(inhaler) when you get cough? There are many products that will help your lungs and body to function better-less coughing. Proper nutrition, exercise (yoga, walking etc.)vitamin w/minerals,herbs(Slippery elm bark,Lung Essentials-Swanson Health Products, herbal cough medicine) air purifier in your bedroom will all help you.
4 :
No, it has nothing whatsoever to do with your cancer risk.
