http://www.medicinenet.com/lung_cancer/page4.htm#toce What are the signs and symptoms of lung cancer? Symptoms of lung cancer are varied dependent upon where and how widespread the tumor is. Warning signs of lung cancer are not always present or easy to identify. A person with lung cancer may have the following kinds of symptoms: * No symptoms: In up to 25% of people who get lung cancer, the cancer is first discovered on a routine chest x-ray or CT scan as a solitary small mass sometimes called a coin lesion. These patients with small single masses often report no symptoms of lung cancer at the time it is discovered. * Symptoms related to the cancer: The growth of the cancer and invasion of lung tissues and surroundings may interfere with breathing, leading to symptoms such as cough, shortness of breath, wheezing, chest pain, and coughing up blood (hemoptysis). If the cancer has invaded nerves, for example, it may cause shoulder pain that travels down the outside of the arm (called Pancoast's Syndrome) or paralysis of the vocal cords leading to hoarseness. Invasion of the esophagus may lead to difficulty swallowing (dysphagia). If a large airway is obstructed, collapse of a portion of the lung may occur and cause infections (abscesses, pneumonia) in the obstructed area. * Symptoms related to metastasis: Lung cancer that has spread to the bones may produce excruciating pain at the sites of bone involvement. Cancer that has spread to the brain may cause a number of neurologic symptoms that may include blurred vision, headaches, seizures, or symptoms of stroke such as weakness or loss of sensation in parts of the body. * Paraneoplastic symptoms: Lung cancers frequently are accompanied by so-called paraneoplastic syndromes that result from production of hormone-like substances by the tumor cells. Paraneoplastic syndromes occur most commonly with SCLC but may be seen with any tumor type. A common paraneoplastic syndrome associated with SCLC is the production of a hormone called adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) by the cancer cells, leading to oversecretion of the hormone cortisol by the adrenal glands (Cushing's syndrome). The most frequent paraneoplastic syndrome seen with NSCLC is the production of a substance similar to parathyroid hormone, resulting in elevated levels of calcium in the bloodstream. * Nonspecific symptoms: Nonspecific symptoms seen with many cancers including lung cancers include weight loss, weakness, and fatigue. Psychological symptoms such as depression and mood changes are also common. When should one consult a doctor? One should consult a health care provider if they develop the symptoms associated with lung cancer, in particular, if they have * a new persistent cough or worsening of an existing chronic cough , * blood in the sputum, * persistent bronchitis or repeated respiratory infections , * chest pain , * unexplained weight loss and/or fatigue , and/or * breathing difficulties such as shortness of breath or wheezing. and http://www.cancerhelp.org.uk/help/default.asp?page=3897 The symptoms of stomach cancer can be quite vague. Symptoms can include * Indigestion, acidity and burping * Feeling full * Pain * Feeling or being sick * Difficulty in swallowing * Bleeding or tiredness and breathlessness because you have lost blood * Blood clots * Weight loss (usually a symptom of a more advanced cancer) Indigestion and burping The earliest symptoms are often acidity and burping. Many people diagnosed with stomach cancer have had symptoms like these for years. But these are symptoms of other stomach problems too. Most people who have chronic indigestion and wind never develop cancer. About 1 in every 50 people going to the doctor for the first time with indigestion and burping will have stomach cancer. Feeling full Another early symptom can be feeling full up sooner when eating your meals. If this leads to eating less over a period of time, you will start to lose weight. Pain, sickness and difficulty swallowing These are common symptoms. More than half of those diagnosed with stomach cancer have either pain, sickness or some difficulty swallowing. The exact site of the pain can vary. It is most usually in the upper abdomen. Or you may have pain just under your breastbone (sternum) or slightly lower down. You may also feel sick or actually be sick. Bleeding Even early stomach cancers can bleed. Bleeding over a period of time can make you anaemic. This means your red blood cell count is too low. Anaemia will make you look pale and feel tired. If you are very anaemic you may feel breathless. Vomiting blood is not a common early symptom, but it can happen. If it does, the blood may not be clearly seen. The blood you bring up may be bright red, which means it is fresh bleeding. Or it may look like used coffee grounds because the blood has been in the stomach for a while. Blood clots People with stomach cancer are more likely to get blood clots. If you have pain or swelling in a leg, or sudden chest pain and breathlessness, you could have a blood clot in your leg or lung. You should contact your doctor straight away because you will need immediate anti-clotting medication. Advanced stomach cancer Symptoms of a more advanced stomach cancer can include * Loss of appetite * Weight loss * Fluid in the abdomen * Blood in the stool * Anaemia Losing your appetite and losing weight are often later symptoms and can be a sign that the cancer is more advanced. Although some people with early stomach cancer lose their appetite too. With an advanced cancer, it may be possible for your doctor to feel a lump in your tummy (abdomen). Some people with advanced stomach cancer develop fluid in the abdomen. This is called ascites. Some stomach cancers bleed but don't cause you to vomit. The blood goes through your digestive system. This can cause your bowel movements to look black, like tar.

what lung cancer stage IV means

what lung cancer stage IV means?
I have a friend with lung cancer at stage IV,so here is my question. What each stage means?mostly important what is the stage IV? I want to help him out so i started making some researches... Than you all so very much. Never been through this cancer situation before, any information will help alot.

Stage IV is serious, as there is no Stage V. You will need to google lung cancer and get some information about how they diagnose. What sort of information will you need, alternative or western medicine. I know about alternative medicine only.
2 :
Stage IV means the cancer has spread to at least one distant site and it is not curable. Treatment at this point is to slow the cancer and decrease their symptoms as much as possible.
3 :
Boston, Stage 4 means it's almost over, Sorry. Nobody can say when, has the doctor said any thing about how much time she has left? At stage 4 he should be able to say 3-6 months. He should so Hospice can be called into the house they are experts on taking home the people in their last stages and keep them as comfortable as possible with pain drugs and pain managment. I'll say a prayer for your friend tonight. GOD Bless. Rita V
4 :
It means it spread. My uncle had stage IV kidney cancer that spread to his spine, and lungs. The tumors fractured his spine, he got that fixed and went through chemo, and radiation. He is in a lot of pain and in a nursing home because he is paralyzed from the tumor breaking his spine. But his oncologist says he has about 5 years left. The doctor told him that in April/May 2010. He was diagnosed May 2009. Hope things work out for your friend.
5 :
For those who subscribe to the medical school textbooks, it means there's nothing more to do. For those who refuse to give up, it means as long as the patient still has the presence of mind and the ability to swallow, there is a chance that it can be cured. Without going into a long, boring, complicated explanation here, I'll give you a few links that you should check out - they can be quite beneficial for what you're seeking. I hope the best for you and your friend. Currently, my sister-in-law has perhaps a month to live, but she's incoherent and unable to swallow, so the information offered for you here will do her no good, unfortunately. I hope you'll be able to make good use of it.

Can you catch something from someone who has lung and liver cancer

Can you catch something from someone who has lung and liver cancer?
My partner was diagnosed with lung & liver cancer.
Cancer - 10 Answers

1 :
No it is not contagious.
2 :
no its impossible to catch anything except a virus from an individual with cancer, irregardless of the type...its non-communicable.
3 :
you can catch any contagious viruses or diseases that he has, you cannot contract the cancer that he has.
4 :
Nope. Dont Worry. =] God Bless
5 :
Sure,.. you can catch a slap upside the head for asking an assinine question
6 :
If the liver tumor is caused by a hepatitis virus, that can be caught. The viruses can be tested for.
7 :
cancer is not a contagious disease. If the person has pneumonia, or some other communicable disease, you could catch that. If the person has AIDS, you could catch the virus if you share bodily fluids. Otherwise, your partner needs all the love and attention you can give.Just be sure to use precautions with the bodily fluids (blood, urine, feces, saliva, lung secretions, etc.) Actually, they are in more danger of catching something from you, as they are compromised already and their immunity is damaged.
8 :
NO you cannot catch cancer from your partner, but if your partner develops TB then yes you can catch that but using universal precautions will help you. Just watch out for secondary infections. But don't let fear keep you from being support to your partner, I have never heard of anyone getting sick or die from a hug or holding someones hand. Just continue to be supportive to your partner, and once again cancer is not contagious
9 :
Most but certainly not all people with lung cancer developed it from smoking cigarettes. Lung cancer is not contagious but there is the lingering question of how dangerous second hand smoke is. I believe that it is not good but that the risk has been overstated and exaggerated. Smoking is not popular and I do not like it but I am not judgmental and I am empathetic of those who are addictted to cigarettes. Liver cancer is not contagious but hepatitis C causes a significant number of cases of liver cancer. Hepatitis C is sexually transmitted so if your partner has this you need to be tested for hepatitis C, hepatitis B, and HIV. I should also mention that having two separate cancers is unusual and it may be more likely (especially if they are a smoker) that your partner has lung cancer which has spread to the liver. If that is the case the question of hepatitis C need not be asked. In closing though I must say that I am very sorry to hear of this unfortunate circumstance. Both lung and liver cancer have a poor prognosis in most cases. As someone who lost a spouse in 1995 (to medical malpractice of all things) I am familiar with the pain of the loss of a partner. My grief required several years and I still miss her. If you search for Elisabeth Kubler-Ross you will find an entire website dedicated not simply to death and dying but rather life itself. I wish you both the very best.
10 :
To answer your question, cancer is not contagious. I wish you and your partner the best.

Can teenagers get lung cancer

Can teenagers get lung cancer?
I know they can cause lung cancer in later life..but can they actually get it when they're a teenager?
Cancer - 9 Answers

1 :
If you smoke when you sleep you probably can. i have never heard of a teen getting lung cancer.
2 :
probably
3 :
any given person at any given age can get any kind of cancer
4 :
Yes, very much so. You can also get STDs, AIDs, skin cancer, testicular cancer, leukemia, age really provides no protection to any disease.
5 :
Yes anyone can!
6 :
Yes, but it is questionable if smoking could cause it. You might need something more active such as inhaling radioactive dust.
7 :
Yes, especially if you have a weak lung capacity, because of asama, aids, or other diseases. Also, if your parent smoked while she was pregnant.
8 :
Rarely-if ever have I seen a teen with primary lung cancer. There are teens who have cancer that spreads to their lungs like testicular cancer for boys or young men. But, never say never. I have seen all sorts of rare diseases in medicine. If you take care of yourself, don't smoke, and keep away from cancer causing agents like asbestos, your chances are very low of contracting lung cancer. Why do you ask?
9 :
It is rare for a teenage to get cancer in the lungs. When they do it is not from smoking and it is not possible to get lung cancer if your mother smoked when she was pregnant. When cancer occurs in the lungs of a teenager it is not a typical lung cancer it is usually a lymphoma or a sarcoma.

Second hand smoke.
2 :
You can get lung cancer from breathing in air pollution. That's definitely not the only way, but it is one of them.
3 :
1) asbestos exposure 2) 2nd hand smoke exposure 3) genetics 4) bad luck (seriously) 5) spread from other cancers
4 :
Well cancer is hereditary. And if this helps, maybe you should check into your family health history on both sides.
5 :
Radon

how do you find out if you have lung cancer? besides going to the docter, read this please

how do you find out if you have lung cancer? besides going to the docter, read this please?
i am 17 and ever since i became a senior i smoke cigarettes and cigars on the weekends just at parties. i inhale the cigars and cigarettes. your not suppose to while smoking gars i dont think, but im not a constant smoker, just at parties. i just would really like to know if i have cancer or how much longer till i get it. i know it is a juvenile act to smoke especially at my age and being a young lady but im just curious. any ideas?

1 :
you can get it at any age. stop smoking now and you won't have to worry about asking this question. it's not cool. I'm only 20 and I hack sh!t up all the time. if you can refrain during the week or whenever you're not at a party then stop now cause it will get worse.
2 :
You can't really know if you have lung cancer without going to a doctor. I am willing to bet you don't have cancer. Even heavy smoking at 17 won't be enough to cause lung cancer. If you are really worried about cancer, stop smoking! Even if it is just for a few months. Lungs will patch themselves up. Also you are not supposed to inhale cigars.
3 :
Once your start smoking, you are on the road to any lung related diseases, not just lung cancer (heart attack, high blood pressure, contaminated blood, inability to breathe..etc). The nicotine in those cigarettes you're inhaling are slowly killing your lung cells. It isn't about how long would it takes a smoker to get cancer, but it's the fact that a smoker is definitely going towards any lung diseases. Sometimes, symptoms don't even show up during the early times, but the lung is slowly "drying" up inside and blackening. The process towards lung cancer is painful because it is often slow and practically eats your lung until your lung can't really function. Not trying to scare you, but it would be a very hard and literally breathless journey till you find out you do have lung cance.r If you quit smoking now, the lung may be able to restore itself and since you're still at a young age, your lung can heal faster than those who are older.
4 :
Only 3% of people with lung cancers are under age 45. I estimated that the average patient I saw with lung cancer had smoked half a million cigarettes over decades. You have made a good choice to consider this now at such a young age. Simply stop smoking now before you get addicted to the drug - nicotine. Your risk of lung cancer will approximate that of someone who never smoked. Male smokers - lifetime risk of lung cancer 1 in 6 Female smokers – risk of lung cancer is 1 in 9 Risk of lung cancer in non-smokers is 1 in 77 Can J Public Health. 1994 Nov-Dec;85(6):385-8. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7895211

Does Obamacare state that lung cancer is preventable

Does Obamacare state that lung cancer is preventable?
My wife never smoked and lived and worked in fresh air. Preventable?

To answer this question one awaits details of "Obamacare" after it is approved.
2 :
1. You think there's something called "Obamacare." There isn't. 2. Lifestyle choices can decrease the odds of getting certain kinds of cancer. But no, there's never a guarantee.
3 :
“The Principles of Advanced First Aid” by J. M. D. The Principles of Advance First Aid aim to prevent injury before it happens, to provide help when injury does occur, to find professional care for all serious threats, and to educate about the importance of abstinence before marriage and the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases. EMS is the Emergency Medical System, a system of professionally trained medical providers, including lifeguards, police, firemen, paramedics, nurses, and doctors, also known as EMTs, Emergency Medical Technicians. Witnesses and Citizen Responders who see an emergency notify the authorities without doing anything to make the situation worse. Knowing emergency numbers and who to call is essential. This is why North America established the 911 emergency hotline, which provides emergency response and emergency care for urgent crisis. Calling 911 puts the caller in touch with an emergency response operator who will ask questions about the crisis in order to contact the proper agencies, fire department, police, rescue, and paramedic units. Fire safety and fire prevention are important topics. Industrial accidents can be prevented by understanding the principles of fire safety and fire prevention. Only licensed and trained professionals are authorized to handle HAZMAT, ‘hazardous material’. Proper equipment is needed. Every office and home should be equipped with smoke detectors, fire alarms, and fire extinguishers. A good garden hose is a good start, but ABC fire extinguishers offer protection for professional offices and industrial platforms. Fire is not a toy. Never allow sparks from a fire to blow into a yard or forest. Always use covered hearths to cook outdoors and always douse the fire with water or a chemical powder afterwards. Stay away from outlets and plugs where electrical appliances are plugged into. Electricity is intense energy and can start a fire if mishandled. Also electricity is dangerous and can shock a careless person to death. Check voltage meters regularly and never handle electrical equipment without a proper insulator such as thick rubber. Never touch exposed electrical wires. An electric charge often remains inside wires after a piece of equipment has been turned off, so never assume that there is no charge remaining. Grounding is a precaution that directs unsafe electrical current away from a device and people to a neutral outlet such as the ground. Charges must be grounded by a grounding wire or pole connecting the source to the ground (‘grounding’). Fuses also help to protect unsafe electrical charges from spreading by limiting the voltage that is allowed through a circuit. If a fuse breaks then the flow of electricity is temporarily stopped until the equipment is turned off and a new fuse is installed. Do not service electrical equipment while such equipment remains on. Take such equipment to a licensed dealer for maintenance or repairs. Superficial burns, partial thickness burns, and full thickness burns need the appropriate care. Such wounds should be cooled with water and then dressed with a clean cloth. Proper medical attention should be immediately sought for any life threatening burn such as a full thickness burn. It is important to always have an exit plan in case of a fire. Keep the area clear of obstacles in order to prevent problems when leaving. Citizen responders survey a scene in order to gather as much information as possible. During this survey they will notice any obstacles, dangers, and victims. Dangers that must be avoided include broken power lines, gas leaks, chemical spills, and fire. Obstacles may include debris, broken glass, scattered tools, and leaks of various kinds. Citizen Responders do not interfere but can call and contact professionals in order to provide the necessary care. Professional caregivers will want to know as much about the accident or problem as possible before they arrive, so any Citizen Responder must be prepared to describe the scene, location, addresses, and phone numbers that will help them in any way. Citizen responders must avoid injury to themselves and must avoid complicating any crisis. Care Givers must always avoid inflicting harm. This includes not inflicting trauma to the spinal cord of any trauma victim by moving them prematurely without the proper stabilization equipment. Shock from an injury can often be treated by warming the victim with a clean blanket. Ice can reduce the swelling from many burns. Ice can also numb the sting from a scrape. Water cleans wounds so that fresh bandages can be applied. Bandages must never choke a victim or cause fractures to nearby bones. Bandages control and stop bleeding, protecting a wound from germs and preventing loss of blood. Never abuse prescriptions. Prescription medication may have side effects that should be fully explained by a doctor. Some patients are allergic to certain medicat

That probably would require a second opinion which would not be an option under the budget-busting Obama plan.
5 :
I put no credibility in Obamacare.
6 :
No, neither is Repube neocon stupidity evidently!
7 :
The one thing you must understand is that the anointed one will say anything, promise anything at all just as long as he gets his way in the matter. Kind of reminds one of a spoiled brat, only in this case the consequences are much more dire.
8 :
while nothing is 100 percent preventable... things can often be done to reduce the chances... that's probably what he's talking about... and who wouldn't want to do that?
9 :
To a degree it is preventable and treatable in the early stages like most cancers. Not smoking helps but bear in mind the air we breath and food we eat has carcinogens in it. Gee how did that get there? Genes has a lot to do with it also. This question like most seeks to minimize the healthy effects of commonsense, diet and exercise as well as periodic checkups that can catch small things before they develop into big EXPENSIVE things requiring serious expensive medical care. Which is cheaper? AIDS medication or a condom? Not smoking or chemo and radiation therapy? An ideal weight or high blood pressure medicine and dialysis? A toothbrush, paste and floss or a root canal, post and crown? Real simple. While it's unfortunate a lot of people with no bad habits do develop serious diseases it's safe to say smokers and obese individuals have a higher probability. How about this: Over the last 60 years or so and billions in research dollars the best we get is don't drink, smoke and get exercise? Where is the cancer vaccine or is more money to be made from keeping someone alive and the disease at bay? Knocking "Obama-care" as some individuals refer to it sound fun but it's really idiotic under the surface. There are families around paying $1000 per month for health insurance that has a deductible so high they have to be dying for it to be useful. Ultimately it's useless. Is addressing that issue and a healthy lifestyle what the Republicans are opposing? Because it sure sounds like it. Especially when all they can come up with is a tax credit for a lousy $2000 against an annual bill of $12000 while leaving the high deductible intact. That's not much of a plan. Too bad their constituents just listen to sound bites and no further.
