If you find it, let us all know. I don't think they ever did. If anything the science has gotten stronger that it does in fact cause lung cancer. I am a smoker and although I'm going to quit anyway, I would like to hear my past stupidity won't catch up with me!

There was an article published from The Journal of Theoretics Vol.1-4 Oct/Nov 1999 Editorial (According to WHO/CDC Data)* I'm not sure if this is exactly what you are looking for.

How does asbestos cause lung cancer

How does asbestos cause lung cancer?
Please make the terms simple. I need it for my report and I don't want to say anything that I don't understand. It's for high school biology.

asbestos is a naturally occuring substance that is basically strands of crystals that can embed themselves in your lung tissue. on type, called crocidolite, is the worst kind of asbestos because the crystals have barbs on them that burrow into your lung tissue and causes cancer. Crocidolite is mined in Africa and is banned in the US by the EPA. there is a misconception that all asbestos is bad for you, but white asbestos does not cause cancer because the crystals are too big and rounded to embed themselves. anyway, i hope this helped...
2 :
myth... govt conspiracy
3 :
The carcinogenic nature of asbestos (chrysotile) has been related to the shape of the particles more than their composition. In other words, the substance itself is not carcinogenic - the shape is! Chrysotile produces very thin fibers that can be many times longer than they are wide. When these become embedded in the lungs, larger particles can be coughed out but smaller particles need to be carried out by a type of white blood cell called a macrophage. Unfortunately, small asbestos fibers tend to be so long relative to their width that they tend to be actually longer than the macrophages. When the macrophages try to engulf them, the cells puncture and the macrophages die before they can do their job. The EPA has targeted asbestos fibers over 8 micrometers in length as being the bad actors in causing mesothelioma (asbestos-related cancer), and claims that particles shorter than about 4 micrometers are not harmful (although this point is still being argued). Theoretically, the macrophages can successfully engulf shorter particles and get rid of them. So why the cancer? There have been various theories about the mechanism. One theory is that the constant release of biochemical "distress signals" given off by the dying macrophages are the actual cause of the cancer. Another theory is that the asbestos particles have active surface sites for the generation of free radicals from oxygen, and that the free radicals are capable of reacting with and damaging the surrounding cells. It's an interesting story. The link below has everything that you need (it is basically a list of resource papers and articles) although you will have to do some work to sift through the material. The summary I wrote here is just from memory. When I was in university many moons ago this was one of the hot research topics in our department, so I got to see a lot of presentations on the subject although it was not an area in which I was personally working. Good luck on the project

How long did your loved one survive with non-small cell lung cancer

How long did your loved one survive with non-small cell lung cancer?
My mother was recently diagnosed and for a time, they thought it could possibly be operable, but we found out that it was not. She is not on air or anything and only found out because she had an x-ray at the dermotologist. She hasn't been told her stage yet, but as far as I know so far, it is still considered "early." How long did your love one live and what was their stage?

There is a lot I could talk to you about this, but in the end you and your mother will have to make your own decisions. First of all - I just want to say that everyone has cancer cells and our bodies can attack and get rid of them, without our ever knowing. There are also many false cancer diagnoses. The problem with knowing is that now your mother has to make some major decisions that could very well make her life horribly miserable. This is JUST my opinion, based on what my father went through. He lived 1 1/2 years after diagnosis, and there is no doubt in my mind that the chemo and radiation killed him. Would the cancer have? We'll never know, but they found the cancer when he had pneumonia. Could that have cured itself through major changes in diet and supplementation? We'll never know. My advice to you is to read all you can on alternative medicine. Find the site www.NaturalNews.com and read everything they have to say there, concerning cancer and nutrition. Get Suzanne Somer's new book called 'Knockout' and read about curing cancer without the harsh effects of chemotherapy and radiation. Educate yourself AS MUCH as you can on your options. Read all you can and weigh out your decisions, based on knowledge She will make the decision she will, and it's not up to me to sway her decisions - either way. I just believe it's important to research ALL the facts before making hasty decisions. Also, if you can, get more than one doctor's opinion.

My father was diagnosed similarly to your mother, while being investigated for another problem. Unlike your mom, though, it was already at stage IV, in the bones, lungs, and widespread. My father lived for a full two years after diagnosis. He was treated thru the Siteman Cancer Center in St. Louis and underwent clinical trials after standard methods failed. He passed away in 2005. The experimental medicines he received are now proven effective, and that was five years ago. Imagine how much better treatment is now! I know you're frightened, but information is your best friend right now, if you know how to look for it and not let yourself be overwhelmed and frightened by the multitude of information. Remember, your mom's oncologist will have experience and have faith. Second opinions do not offend physicians at all; they encourage them. Everyone wants the best for your mom, so take heart in that. My best to you!

Can working at a fastfood restuarant like Wendy's cause lung cancer

Can working at a fastfood restuarant like Wendy's cause lung cancer?
I don't have lung cancer. I hope I never do and i symphasize with families that lose loved ones and those who have to suffer the long road to recovery or not... I recently had a showing on a cat-scan a 5mm nodule last March and ever since i have been so paranoid... But yet it didn't show up in a x-ray.. I'm just hoping for the best and may god find a cure for cancer!

No, not really. To file a lung cancer claim against them you'd have to prove, beyond a reasonable doubt, that you were constantly exposed to lung-cancer-causing carcinogens, like asbestos or second-hand-smoke, and you weren't, so, no. Good luck!... ☺
2 :
Not likely. It can cause other issues, though. And, if there is something wrong being done about the air in a particular store, then lung cancer can come into play. Just as Asbestos in the ceiling can cause problems with the lungs...if the particular store has that issue. Not a Wendy's thing, though.

not long

Depends on type of cancer, oat cell vs small cell, the stage he is in, his overall health, what treatments he is willing and able to take etc. Too many variables but this is a terminal illness.
3 :
sorry to say but he wont have to long a few months at best he doesnt stand much chance o getting threw cancer at that age but there is always a chance but im afraid he wont have to long
4 :
Ok, ok,ok....before everyone gives this man an automatic death sentence, know what you are talking about first. First, it depends on the type of cancer, then the stage. Staging is another way of stating wether the cancer is in one spot only, where the spot is, and if it has spread to the lymph nodes or other organs. Some cancers are fast growing and some are slow. This plays a big part in choosing what type of chemo is used. Or if it's operable,or if radiation can be used. SOme times 1 is used or others use a combination of surgery, chemo, or radiation. And not in this particular order. SOme cancers are surgically removed. Others, surgery can not be preformed, but, radiation or chemo is used instead. It's very complex and it is always different for everyone. Some people survive for another 8 years or so after diagnosis. Others, it happens very quickly. The best thing to do is talk with your grandpa and find out what his doctors are telling him what his options are. Do not give up hope. Cancer treatment has come a long way. And they are finding out differents to treat it with good results. I know this to be true. I went through this with my dad. Believe me, your grandpa may repsond favorably to his treatment and go into what we call remission where the cancer is contained. If it can be contained, patients can go on an live their lives. Unfortunatley, it does sometimes come back. And then, you start the whole process over again. The point I'm trying to make here is.....just because he has this diagnosis, does not mean he is going to die right away. You don't know that yet and neither do these other people on this board. Good luck and I wish you and your grandpa the best in these tough times.
5 :
Don't wrap him in cotton wool - let him live whatever length of life he has to the full. My Dad had Ca Bronchus and his one regret was that he'd left it too late to visit Thailand and see the orchids. His Doc is the one to tell you the probable prognosis.
6 :
it all depends. his oncologist probably told him because if it was in a late stage he would only have a few monthes left...so because he hasnt (due to ur question) im sure he has awhile left. it just depends on his overall health besides cancer and if he exercises daily...it also depends if he was a smoker...just talk to his oncologist and i am very sorry he has cancer =[ i have a ton of family history of cancer in my family and its a terrible thing to watch just spend as much time w him as possible !

How to tell my mom who has lung cancer that they also found tumors in her brain

How to tell my mom who has lung cancer that they also found tumors in her brain?
My mom went on vacation to a foreign country were she became very ill. They found brain tumors and told us the family and kept it from her. She was in a really delicate state...hardly coherent. So she has no clue. Four months later she was able to return to Texas and needs to go to the doctor. We were told by MD Anderson that she will have to find out. They don't hold anything back from the patient. Thats what i was afraid of. How do we break that to her? Please help!!!

Don't tell her! Let the medical experts break the news to her. She will have many questions and her doctor will be able to answer them, you won't.
2 :
I would leave up to the doctor to say all that. they are very comforting and it will probably be better than you tellling her that. You can try your best to talk to her, make her feel better. I hope she recovers. :(
3 :
Best to let the Medicals carry that burden ,however YOU be there for that much needed Support
4 :
She deserves to know the truth as soon as possible. Why this information has been withheld from her is wrong. An adult of sound mind has a right to know the truth about their medical condition. Either the news can come from those she loves or from her doctors, it doesn't matter as long as she as told sooner rather than later. It is almost impossible to keep this type of information from a patient anyway . . you wouldn't want a neighbor to slip up and mention it . . than she might lose all trust in her family for 'hiding' this from her. Tell her. How do you tell her . . you sit down and start the hardest conversation you have ever had . . and you do it out of love and respect for her.
5 :
I'm with Panda. I cannot understand how the prior doctors withheld that information from an adult patient. The doctors should be the one to break that news.
6 :
I agree with everyone above who says that it is up to the doctor to break the news to the patient. I just want to add that my mother was treated for lung cancer at M.D. Anderson, and it's probably the best place in the country, if not the whole world, to be treated for cancer. All the doctors, nurses, and other personnel there are very competent and compassionate, and they have all the most up-to-date treatments and technology. Good luck with your mother.

You probably have asthma or sinus problems, just see your doctor and don't sweat it.
2 :
it's normal for teenagers to get chest pain. the feeling in your throat could be from stress. or maybe you are getting sick with a cold or something. if you're really worried go to a doctor
3 :
It is possible that you have developed some sort of allergy/asthma related to the smoke. Don't panick, but go to the doctor so they can check ya out.
4 :
1. you don't have lung cancer - it just doesn't work that way 2. talk to your family about ways you can avoid their smoke. 3. relax - everything will be fine.
5 :
If you think this is really serious, don't ask about it here, go see your doctor.
6 :
My god, you have a freaking bronchial infection- calm the hell down, see a doctor, then see a shrink.
7 :
Lung cancer develops in time (usually around 40/50ish).if you're really having problem breathing look for a doctor. U'll probably go for a chest x-ray.
8 :
It sounds like it could be bronchitis. Go to a doctor and get taken care of. It's miserable to be around smokers isn't it? All five of the kids in my family, including me, used to smoke. I was the youngest and first to quit. Then everyone else but one brother quit. He died with cancer.
9 :
The frequent early symptoms of lung cancer are: - Constant pain in the chest or elsewhere, (possibly from the cancer spreading to a bone). Excessive fatigue. Deteriorating breathlessness. Chronic cough. Weight loss &loss of appetite Hoarseness Wheezing Pyrexia of unknown origin Chest pain Dyspnea The above symptoms also being the symptoms of many other lung problems, to determine the cause, it is always worthwhile to see a physician. Once you entered the doctor’s cabin, he will put forth frequent questions about your medical history, along with questions about your accidental or incidental exposure to hazardous chemicals. Physical Examination for an Early Symptom of Lung Cancer After inception of the early symptom of the lung cancer, your physician will subject you for physical examination. You may be asked to give a sample of sputum for the occurrence of cancer cells, if you are suffering from unrelenting cough with sputum (mucus). Other than this, for easy location of the abnormal spots in your lung, your doctor will order a specialized X-ray including CT scan or simple chest X-ray. In order to examine your lungs along with airways, your health care professional may use bronchoscope, and will take sample, or biopsy, of the tumor by means of the bronchoscope itself. Through either nostrils or mouth, the bronchoscope will be inserted into one’s lung. After finding the early symptom of the lung cancer, this is one of the several ways in which the doctor collects the biopsy sample. In order to recognize lung cancers of smaller size, most of the physicians are most likely use a modern CT scan in smokers, which can be treated and cured easily than the large sized lung cancer. To spot small sized cancers, the method called helical-low dose CT scan has been used extensively. If the cancer spreads to other parts of the body, various other symptoms may occur. That is, if there is metastasis. With the following possible symptoms for each area, Lung cancer can spread to the liver, the brain, or the bones: Brain: headaches, seizures, nausea, vomiting, weakness Liver: stomach pain (especially the right side), jaundice Bones: bone pain An MRI, a bone scans and CT scan are the common tests to find out the metastasis stage of your lung cancer after observing the early symptom of lung cancer.

Nothing appears to cancer. Cancer cannot see or think it is a disease. Coughing up blood is not a typical symptom of lung cancer and a tumor 0.5cm would not likely cause any symptoms.
