"neither has any health problems" .. sorry but yes they do .. it might not be apparent YET however they are huritng their body and they are doing damadge it will become more evident as time goes on trust me just b.c you smoke dosnt mean you WILL get lung cancer .. BUT if you smoke inside a house/car .. you do put your loved ones at risk for lung cancer as well .. so not only do you risk your own life and health but the heath of the ones you love most ..something to think about (i know you said you dont smoke but its easier to say "you" then your dad/brother so just bear w. that part)
2 :
If your Dad has smoked 30 years yes he does have health problems & so will your brother. Dont go by Dad & brother. Dont smoke in the long run its not worth it.

My sympathy goes out to you and your family,,,,along with all that are friends. It's a difficult time for you all. The doctors do the best they can when deciding on the exact time any individual has left to live, but their guesses are given based on past cases. And most of the time the doctors do get real close. Your dad is definately close,,,,, Please talk with your dad about the Lord and his salvation. It might also be time for you to turn him over to the Lord and start praying for your dad and family, and ask the Lord to give you all the strength and love you're going to need in the soon future.......

Hi Erin.....I'm not a doctor. My step dad died of cancer about ten years ago. After the bloating started, he lived about ten more days.....but he was at home with us, at his request. They may have been able to prolong it at the hospital, but it's very painful, and he decided not to prolong it. He also didn't want to die in a hospital. Sorry to intrude, but I just thought it might be helpful.........stay with your family....it's an important time to be 'there'. Also, say everything to him that you want to, or need to, ASAP. That's all I have. It's tough. Take care.
3 :
yes it is very hard. my aunt just passed away with lung cancer, she experienced the bloating and not eating as well. however she keep on trying. she lasted a month once the bloating started. se if your family is nterested n hospic care for your step dad. we had it for my granma and my aunt. it was very helpful for everyone. hang in there dear!
4 :
The length of time is going to depend greatly on him. Is he ready to die, or is he still fighting? Has the family let him know its ok to die, or are they telling him he needs to hold on and fight? Is he depressed or in good spirits? My honest advice is make peace very soon with the fact that he will likely die very soon. Make sure he knows that you love him, but you know its his time and if hes ready its ok to let go. Maybe even get him to sign out of the hosp and die at home. Medications can make this process easier on him. And I in no way mean to be offensive, but euthanization (done by him only if its what he wants) can make the experience much more pleasant as well. It will be sad and very hard, but try to celebrate his life, rather than mourning his death. Perhaps if there is something he never got the chance to do, he could do it now, or you could somehow find a way for him to see or experience whatever it is.

Erin, my mom was in the same situation. Lung cancer, bloating, fluid in the abdomen. She died within a week and a half after these symptoms. Hospice is a great organization to call. Your dad can be at home and they will keep him comfortable with breathing treatments, valium, morphine, etc... Enjoy the time you have left and be thankful for the time spent.

How can some people get lung cancer from smoking and some don't

How can some people get lung cancer from smoking and some don't?
Say two people have been smoking for 20 years... they smoke the same amount of cigarettes a day... yet one of them gets cancer and the other doesn't? I've heard tons of stories that people can smoke their whole lives and never get cancer, emphysema, etc, but some people smoke less and they get it?

There is no way in this world to answer this question. I am sure many a doctor would like to know this as well. My dad died from lung cancer but he had smoked all of his life. He died at 72. I have wondered the same thing that you asked.
2 :
Genetics, degrees of stress, age, other forms of pollution the person comes in contact with, eating habits--there are so many different factors involved that it would be hard to say.
3 :
There is a theory that smokers get a different type of lung cancer than non-smokers . . that the disease occurs in the lungs for both . .but that it is two distinctly different cancers.
4 :
Multiple reasons. For one thing, cancer is a statistical process -- multiple protective mechanisms have to be knocked out for it to occur. Think of the smoke as darts and suppose you have to get 10 darts in the same section of the dartboard to cause cancer. In some games, that's going to happen sooner than in others. For another, there are genetic differences, For example, they'e recently discovered a gene that causes some people to hold smoke in their lungs longer than others. The people who hold the smoke in longer have higher cancer rates, in fact they may account for most cases of cancer due to smoking. Susceptibility to emphysema, too, may be strongly influenced by genetics, and heart attacks. External factors can also interact with the smoke to increase the chance that disease will occur. Radon gas, for example, is after smoking the second-leading cause of lung cancer.

Might be difficult...you could try Cancer Treatment Centers of America, but you would have to travel and it might be expensive...or you could try clinical trials in your area....listed below... Lung Cancer links http://clinicaltrials.gov/ct/gui/action/FindCondition?ui=D008175&recruiting=true (clinical trials for lung cancer..hit map tab for local trials) http://www.cancer.gov/clinicaltrials/results/lung (lung cancer clinical trials) http://www.cdc.gov/search.do?action=search&queryText=lung+cancer&image.x=9&image.y=6 (CDC lung cancer links) http://search.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/query?DISAMBIGUATION=true&FUNCTION=search&SERVER2=server2&SERVER1=server1&PARAMETER=lung+cancer&x=54&y=7 (medline plus lung cancer links) http://www.multiplemyeloma.org/clinical_trials/4.02.html (clinical trials frequently asked questions) http://www.multiplemyeloma.org/clinical_trials/Clin_Trials_The_Basics.ppt (basics of cancer clinical trials (need powerpoint) http://www.multiplemyeloma.org/clinical_trials/Clin_Trials_In-Depth.ppt (cancer clinical trials in depth (need powerpoint) http://www.pparx.org (medicine assistance) http://www.copays.org/ (copay assistance for lung cancer) Nutrition and Support for cancer patients http://www.cancer.org/docroot/MBC/MBC_6.asp? Unfortunately the chances of curing someone with stage four lung cancer are ridiculously slim. Lung cancer kills more than 90% of those affected and stage 4 is as far along as you can get. You could investigate the possibility of clinical trials, but I feel unfortuantely you are just going to have to get used to the idea that your grandmother is going to die of it.
3 :
My mom was diagnosed with lung cancer and they gave her one year to live. She lived one year and six months from the date of her diagnosis. Unfortunately, all you can do is enjoy the time you have left with your loved one. Hospice is a great organization to contact so that your grandmother can be comfortable at home... with breathing treatments, morphine, valium, etc....
4 :
Man, this is one brutal crowd. You might want to try being a little more compassionate with your answers. My sister was diagnosed 5 years ago with Stage 4 lung cancer when she was 55. They gave her a year. She will be 61 in May. She has done a few different clinical trials (no chemo), and will be trying another at the end of the month. Find out what type of lung cancer she has, non-small cell or small cell. How much of the lung or lungs are involved? Does she currently smoke? Tell her to do research, which is the most important part of helping yourself. I wish you all the best!

What are the chances of getting lung cancer at age 30

What are the chances of getting lung cancer at age 30?
I'm just curious about this.

Depends on your sex, smoking habits etc. Try this site for more info
2 :
At the age of 30 gender and smoking habits has little to do with it. 0.2% of all lung cancers occur in people under 35, so the chances are very small.
3 :
It depends on a whole load of factors other than just age. Your individual history and genetics will determine your actual risk. Based on age and sex, if you are male, there is a 1/3164 chance of you developing lung cancer. If you are female, there is a 1/2977 chance.

Huh?

I don't know much about it, but i do know my grandfather beat it. He used ambertos ( I think that is how you spell it) and had laser radiation done to him. Laser radiation is were they put you in a mold and pinpoint every cancer cell in you then shoot a laser at it, and then it kills the cancer cells. that is what I know to learn more just do a google search or something.
3 :
Lung cancer is a disease of uncontrolled cell growth in tissues of the lung. This growth may lead to metastasis, which is the invasion of adjacent tissue and infiltration beyond the lungs.
4 :
Smoking causes 90% of all lung cancers , but this effect of smoking is usually delayed until the patient is 55 or over. Other causes of lung cancer include asbestos dust, irradiatioon and chrome dust. There are several different types of lung cancer , depending on the cells within the lung that are effected. The common types are : - Squamous cell carinoma - this is relatively common and symptoms usually occur early , but the cancer doubles in size every three months and spreads early to lymph nodes -Oat cell carinoma - far more serious. They spread rapidly to other parts of the body and they are immposible to cure. -Secondary cancers which are the spread of cancer from other parts of the body to the lungs. -Many other rarer types of lung cancer are known. The early warning signs are weight loss, a persistant cough, coughing blood and worsening breathlessness. Later symptoms include loss of appetite, chest pain and hoarseness. Spread of cancer to other organs is the next stage.( most commonly to bone and the brain ) Prevention is always better than cure, and that means stop smoking. Even in heavy smokers , after five years of non-smoking , the risk of developing lung cancer will reduce to near normal. Treatment involves major surgery, irradiation and potent drugs , depending on the type of cancer present. Radiation may be used to shrink the original tumour , but is primarily used to treat cancers that have spread to other organs. Fewer than 20% of all patients with lung cancer survive more than five years from the diagnosis.

You can find your information here http://www.newmesotheliomatreatments.com/treatment-of-lung-cancer.html

This is a very loaded question. There is so much a person can write. My mom just passed away from small cell lung cancer. I would suggest to get onto one of the lung cancer yahoogroups. People who have the lung cancer, survivors, and care takers, families trying to cope. You will get all of your questions answered on them.

What is your question about these subjects?
2 :
What about it? Both are conditions that will affect your life severally, and may end it, would not recommend either of them. Giving up smoking will reduce your chances of suffering from either.
3 :
Anyone can get COPD or lung cancer but us idiot smokers are greater at risk. The lung's normal functions are compromised by the garbage we put into our bodies which compromises our lung's abilities to funciton properly. Take a drag off of a cigarette and blow the smoke through a hankerchief or paper towel. . .the residue that you see is probably only a fraction of that we have put into our lungs over the years. When we compromise the bodies abilities we change the chemical balance meant to be in our bodies there for we leave ourselves wide open to a number of things. COPD and lung cancer is the way the body tells us something has gone wrong but by that time it is usually too late.

How long does it take for you to be along abestos to get lung cancer

How long does it take for you to be along abestos to get lung cancer?
I was around it for about an hour...

MUCH MUCH MUCH longer that that. Seriously, we're talking shipbuilding or 40 yrs of installing insulation. You'll be fine if it was just 1hr.
2 :
You can get mesothelioma after a single exposure. Being around it isn̢۪t enough, you have to inhale it. One of the hospitals I work for is near the Port of Los Angeles and I have seen about half a dozen cases in women whose only exposure was to the particles on their husband̢۪s clothing.
3 :
The long-term effects of asbestos exposure and these cancers symptoms usually do not appear for 20 to 30 or more years after exposure. Those symptoms and warning signs, however, hide a more serious, underlying condition. Unfortunately, these asbestos are usually not highly curable. Since these diseases do not progress quickly after exposure, they typically are not diagnosed until the disease has progressed into its latter stages.
