How long do people typically live after the diagnosis of lung cancer

How long do people typically live after the diagnosis of lung cancer?
Thankx and pray for my dad
Cancer - 10 Answers

1 :
ohhh Im sorry
2 :
It depends on the stage, his other health factors, and his age. Eary stage lung cancers are often treatable and beatable. Late stage ussualy have very poor survival rates, although chemo can extend life.
3 :
There is no "typical answer" for this. It depends on what stage of cancer they have identified it as. The farther along the cancer is, the chances of survival typically decrease, as does the amount of time allotted. But no matter what, there is chemotherapy, and most of all HOPE!
4 :
Cancers spread at different rates in each patient, so only a doctor after many tests can attempt to make a diagnosis of this. It can also depend on how different people respond to the treatment given. With lung cancer patients sadly by the time an initial diagnosis has been made the cancer is to often too advanced for a cure. My brother did not even have a cough until the end, though he was very weak and tired when he was diagnosed. By this time the cancer had spread and he only lived for a few months. The sooner the diagnosis is made the better, then treatment can be started, so checking out any symptoms with the doctor is essential as soon as possible as these symptoms could be a number of things.
5 :
I'm sure it depends on the case. Good luck to you two.
6 :
I have known two people who have died from lung cancer in the past few years. Both of them lived about 3 years after initial prognosis. However, you should research medical sites, because I am sure that it all depends on the type of lung cancer that they have and what stage they are in. Both of these individuals were probably diagnosed in Stage 1.
7 :
Hi from France The doctors said for my dad who had a lug cancer : '' He will live about 5 / 6 months '' .. He lived 7 ... Perhaps that can be better for yours ? I hope for you ... I wish you the best, Catherine
8 :
My heart goes out to you and your dad. My father has lung cancer as well. During this difficult time, be aware that your question is a very complicated one, and one that no one, even his doctor, will be able to answer with any real certainty. Everyone is different, and every person with cancer has a unique course and prognosis. That being said, life expectancy is based upon multiple factors such as: Age at diagnosis Type of cancer (there are several different kinds of lung cancer) Stage at which the cancer was found Treatment General heath status including other diseases such as heart disease or diabetes All these things are important to consider. My father was lucky in that his cancer was found very early, but he is older and has many other health problems. He was not offerred chemotherapy because, quite frankly, it probably would have made him sicker, given that he has so much other stuff going on. Unfortunately, lung cancer is typically not diagnosed until it is late stage, because that is when symptoms usually show up. There are some treatments available but they are not always effective, especially if the cancer is very aggressive (fast-growing). Your dad's oncologist is the best one to evaluate his prognosis based upon all these factors. In the meantime, just focus on being with your dad and giving him your love and support! Best wishes to you and your family.
9 :
When my dad was 73 years old he was diagnosed with lung cancer, they told him as he had a bad heart he might not survive the operation, they operated and removed part of his lung, he survived and was home the following week and make a complete recovery. 3 years later he died of bowel cancer but we were told it was not connected to the lung cancer. It all depends on what stage your dad is at and his general health and age but my prayers are with you. God Bless.
10 :
I have to agree with others that it all depends on the circumstances, severity/stage of the disease, age, health of your Dad, and God's will. I already said prayers for you and your Dad. I hope he beats cancer like a red headed step child! People survive all kinds of cancers. Don't give up hope.

Survival rate inoperable stage 3 lung cancer

Survival rate inoperable stage 3 lung cancer?
My 72-year-old grandmother has been diagnosed with stage 3 lung cancer. The doctor says it is inoperable. She began radiation therapy this week (so far they have not said anything about chemo) she has been a smoker since the 1950's and is currently still smoking. What are her chances of survival.
Cancer - 2 Answers

1 :
I don't know, but you can check out www.whyplankton.com
2 :
I am very sorry for your grandmother's diagnosis. Your grandmother's oncologist is the best source for this information. He/she knows the case best and can best opine about her chances given her overall health and the specific kind of lung cancer she has. In general, stage 3 lung cancer is considered incurable and it has a low 5-year survival rate. The 5-year survival rate is under 10%. If you want to learn more, visit cancer.org and click on "choose a cancer topic." Again, I am very sorry for her diagnosis. I hope the radiation can help slow down the tumor's progression and give her some good quality time.

What are the odds of getting lung cancer if you smoke 10 ciggarettes a week

What are the odds of getting lung cancer if you smoke 10 ciggarettes a week?

Cancer - 5 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
50/50.....some people smoke a pack a day for fifty years and dont get cancer, others get it from simply breathing polluted air...smoking cigarrettes increases your odds, and so not smoking decreases them....id say dont, but its your body, do as you pleasee.
2 :
Pretty good chance. It doesn't matter how much you smoke, it is still the carcinogens in your body, it might take longer but you can still get it. If it is only 10 why not just quite before it becomes more.
3 :
i would say that if you are around a smoker that lights up that much, your odds are pretty good of getting lung cancer. If you are that worried about it, tell the person to not smoke around you
4 :
Greatly reduced, than if you were smoking per day. With 10 per week, you will have the same amount of risk of contracting lung cancer as someone who lives in a densely populated city, with emmission laws from 1970. There are no official statistics for that number of cigarrettes per day, but I imagine quite close 1 packe per week. The thing to remember with odds is that everyone very optimistically includes themselves in the better odds. In our case, the 92% that don't get cancer. You must remember that you may well be in that 8%, because the people that get cancer, are just like you and me, and throughout their lives like to believe themselves to be in the percentage that don't get cancer. From one smoker to another, for that amount of smoking, you should seriously consider quitting.
5 :
higher than if you didnt smoke
6 :
It depends upon the person. Everyone is different. Try Vitamin C therapy. A few years ago a cancer specialist came out with a paper that said the best cancer/infection fighter found to date was Interferon. At the time it was $15,000 a gram. The paper also said that Interferon was a by-product of the natural breakdown of Vitamin C in your body. Shortly after that the FDA tried to make Vitamin C by prescription only. Guess why? The FDA has the RDA for Vitamin C set at 64 mg a day, just enough to ward off scurvy. Linus Pauling, who got a Nobel Prize for his work with Vitamin C and a second Nobel Prize for Organic Chemistry, said that 1000 mg a day should be the minimum and 2000 mg a day if you are sick or smoke. He played tennis almost daily until the day he died at 96. Personally, I got sick twice a year for 2 weeks at a time, for more than 20 years, with something to this day the doctors have no idea what it was, but for a week in the middle of those 2 weeks I was flat on my back. I started Vitamin C therapy once I gave up on the doctors. I took enough to be asymptomatic for those 2 weeks. Too much and I got diarrhea and too little and I got sick. Within a narrow range, and it followed a bell curve over those 2 weeks, I was not sick. At the height I was taking 40,000 mg a day and 300,000 over the 2 weeks. After 2 years of that I have not been sick since รข€“ more than 15 years. Vitamin C acts as a natural diuretic so you need to drink a lot of water and watch your body in total, but my kidneys did not dissolve as the doctors predicted, or get massive kidney stones as other predicted. I did not dissolve my bones as some predicted or completely calcify my joints as others predicted. I had no side effects at all. It might be something to consider.

How we procede on for it?
Cancer - 4 Answers

It really depends on the type of cancer, how widespread it is and if it has spread to other organs. She really needs to see a doctor and have some medical procedures done. For example, an MRI, CAT scans , bone scans and PET scans. These are typically done to check for metastasis (spreading of cancer and staging of cancer). Possible treatments could be radiation therapy and / or chemotherapy. Her long term prognosis would entirely depend on the type of cancer and if it has spread. Some cancers are slow growing and some are quite aggressive. I hope she will be well.
2 :
I would ask what grade she's in and what is the prognosis. Then the treatment and how to make her comfortable.
3 :
I am not sure but if the hospital can only offer palliative care then it may be worth looking at Cancer Clinical Trials www.cancerhelp.org.uk to see if anybody is researching treatment which might help your mother. I hope that the prognosis is good.
4 :
Depends on the stage of the cancer... you may want to read: God's Medicine Is Best by Linda Wise, I think there was something natural for lung cancer for women... Good luck!

If you google the words studies link smoking and lung cancer you get tons of hits. At the top of the google page is a section that says "scholarly articles." You can access some of them without paying and they are a good resource. Otherwise, use the references with .org or .gov sites. That way you know that the information you're getting is researched and true.

Smokers are most susceptible, though some others exposed to noxious substances are also. Cure depends on the type of cell involved. All the other info is involved, but here is a link to a site that will help.

" However, the overall five-year survival rate is still relatively low at 14 percent, compared to other cancers."

Can a tenant sue a landlord if they contract lung cancer if there is a high level of radon in the basement

Can a tenant sue a landlord if they contract lung cancer if there is a high level of radon in the basement?
The tenant's apartment is in the basement. He has lived there for aproximately 3 years and he moved into the apartment when there was a different owner. There is also a clause in the lease that states that the place has not been tested for radon. Also, the guy is a heavy cigarette smoker. (No record as of yet as to where the guy lived previously) For the record, I feel aweful about it but at the same time I don't want to see a lawsuit.
Law & Ethics - 7 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Well, if he is a smoker (tennent) then he'll have a tough time convincing otehrs that he did nothing 2 contribute to the cancer. If he knew there was slause in the lease about radon, then he should have insisted on the basement being tested before moving in OR not take the place at all. Has he threatened to sue you ? technically, he should go after the original owner that rented to him. No one held a gun to his head to live there. I dont think he could successfully sue u. Go for a free consultation at a lawyer, just to see what they say. You could also go to an online legal advice board and see what they say I'd get the radon test done if i were u. Just to be safe. As others have said...anyone can sue for any reason. Heck, some lutze sued McDonalds, and won, because he spilled his coffee and burned himself
2 :
Well, anybody can file a suit over just about anything. Radon exposure takes some time to potentially cause cancer. I think it would be a difficult case for him to win, being a heavy smoker and relatively recent exposure to radon. I think to win he would be to be knowingly exposed. and the contract says it is unknown, since it was not tested. Sometimes defending yourself can be very expensive anyway, so hope it doesn't come to that.
3 :
Anybody can sue for just about anything. To get cancer from radon requires long-term exposure. He would likely have cancer from the smoking. However, if you are in an area known for high radon, your clause may not be good enough. You need to get it tested and take action if necessary. For instance, if you knowingly rent to renters with young children, even if it states on the lease that there may be lead paint, if a child is injured, you are liable because you should have known the unsuitability of renting to someone with young children.
4 :
The right Lawyer can get anything thing from anyone for any reason. All they need to do is convince a jury. If they have proof of high radon levels, then that is a contributing factor, according to the legal system in the U.S.! It doesn't matter that the man smoked. Your insurance company will most likely offer them a settlement. I hope the basement apartment was approved by your zoning & building code department, or you could be in violation of renting an illegal or unsafe unit to a non-family member.
5 :
It sounds to me as if you knew--and still know--that there is indeed radon in the basment. Come on, your feelings of guilt are for a reason...It's awful what happened to him, and yes I believe that he should be able to sue. He needs cancer treatment and to have his medical bills paid--he's a human being for God's sake. Look, you can do the whole "cover my asss/ shady cover up" thing all you want. But speaking as a person who's seen it before-- 99% of the time when you screw someone over like that--if COMES BACK to you. You could come down with cancer of any disease yourself. So, you need to hire a lawyer, look into how much your insurance will pay, and do the Right Thing--and get this over with so you can move on with your life knowing that you can sleep well at night knowing you didnt help to cause someone's painful, untimely death..Or better yet--since you may come down with cancer yourself from also being exposed to radon , you might want to link up with yout tennant and file a lawsuit agiant the either the builders or the makers of whatever product is emitting Radon..Good Luck
6 :
no he cannot-if the cancer was down to radon poisoning then the tenant assumes all risks (he was made aware of this and still moved in-he should have insisted on a radon test before he signed the tenancy agreement). if he is a smoker it depends on what brought on the cancer-if it was smoking related then obviously he cannot sue his landlord.
7 :
you can sue anybody in America for anything, whether you can prove it or not is another story.

we all hate some of the things we did when we were younger, its all a part of growing up, as far as what you can do, i would try and visit with her and do one or two nice things, it may not make up for anything you did to her but it shows that you are sorry and you know you were wrong
2 :
It depends on when it was discovered. Usually it is caught by accident during a chest ex ray. That's how mine was found. I had to have the tumor removed along with a lobe of the lung it was attached to. I was lucky none of the cancer cells spread anywhere else. If it had spread then that is not very good. Chemotherapy and radiation treatments can be used to try and stem its spread and kill it. There are drugs for the negative effects of the treatments. Sorry you feel so bad about your former teacher. Kids can be cruel and when they mature usually do feel bad for the moronic things they did. Why not send her a card or flowers? It may make you both feel better.
3 :
You can research lung cancer and show her you have taken an interest in her condition and that you care about what is happening. Below is a site that would provide all the information you need.

it doesn't always take years. tell him to see a doctor.
2 :
Tell your dad to call out to God out loud and ask God to heal him. Once your dad is healed tell him to thank God and follow God by reading the bible often and talking to God often out loud or in his head.
3 :
You ask how may years does it take to get lung cancer? not everyone gets lung cancer and lots of non smokers get lung cancer because of the chemicals we breath in and the additives and E numbers in our food. What makes him think he has lung cancer? My dad smoked for 60 years before he got lung cancer and he stopped smoking and they removed part of his lung and he recovered, 3 years later he was diagnosed with bowel cancer and died 6 weeks later? We don't know who or at what age someone may get cancer, you are thinking because he smoked he will get it, that is not right, go and search food additives and E numbers and you will see that food we eat every day and chocolate, cakes, biscuits, take aways all have cancer killing chemicals in them?

2 :
One can not get cancer by two months smoking. Body,s immune system is able to clear out damage if you stop. Our all organgs are good healers if we live healthy life.
3 :
They don't know what causes cancer but smoking, in some cases contributes to it. I smoked for thirty-seven years, up to four packs a day and quit almost fourteen years ago. They tell my lungs look good but it affected my heart. I never smoked maryjane but I cut and burnt acres of it before they fined you for it growing on your property!

Riiigghht - because that's what all of the studies and literature say, too.
4 :
no its not true my uncle died 2 months ago from smoking cigs. and he had lung cancer
5 :
No. But there is research which suggests that smoking can decrease the amount of radiation (from nuclear fallout) that is absorbed in your lungs. But that isn't a great reason to start smoking!
6 :
It is the opposite, and you know it. However, even though your questions sounds stupid on the face of it, if heart disease from smoking killed you before you got lung cancer then I suppose in some warped way it did prevent lung cancer.
7 :
Smoking cigarettes could certainly prevent a person from getting lung cancer-by causing the person to die of a heart attack.
8 :
Our grandparents may have smoked all their lives and lived into their ninties. WE DON'T THAT LUXARY. Our environment i.e the air we breath is so toxic with heavy metals and pollutants, what hope do our lumgs have if we smoke as well. Lung cancer here we come. cheers

Noooo, it couldn't be... Or people(smokers) would be just about living longer then us. Isn't it the opposite?
11 :
actually, it's vice versa. think about it...it's nicknamed "cancer stick"...
12 :
You have been duped. Smoking can and does cause lung cancer, and also expiates asthma and other lung conditions. And it most certainly does not extend your lifespan, if any thing it can shorten ones life span considerably.
13 :
sure not, its Cigarette companies owners lie!
14 :
You must be kidding. Smoking is the very worst thing you can do and is one of the biggest reasons for lung cancer as well as other cancers. This is the biggest like I have ever heard. Whoever made this statement needs to wake up.

even non-smokers get lung cancer so? you want to smoke? we will find out may be twenty years later.

Now im wondering if i should get checked or not. stupid me, also smoked off and on from 9th to th grade, and a few times smoked marijuana. ive always had problems breathing and such since i was very young and im 18 now, should i get checked, what are the symptoms?

It would be extremely rare, almost never heard of, that a person your age would have lung cancer. The early symptoms of lung cancer are a persistent cough that lasts for weeks. If your breathing difficulties are distressing to you - your family physician can check that out for you with a quick listen through a stethoscope. Stay away from cigarettes and weed - both can cause cancer.
2 :
its very unlikely to be lung cancer but more likely to be a chronic bronchitis or such as that, maybe even an asthmatic bronchitis. get checked out by a doctor as these are highly treatable
3 :
coughing and you can't hardly breathe I hope you go to the doc ,

does weed make you get lung cancer or is that just ciggarretes and how bad is weed for you

does weed make you get lung cancer or is that just ciggarretes and how bad is weed for you?
?? like i know its bad for your brain but does it really like kill your lungs as bad as nicotine?

The content in the article may be inaccurate (as stated on the website; see link) 1) Most marijuana smokers smoke the bud, not the leaf, of the plant. The bud contains only 33% as much tar as tobacco. 2) Marijuana smokers do not smoke anywhere near as much as tobacco smokers, due to the psychoactive effects of cannabis. 3) Not one case of lung cancer has ever been successfully linked to marijuana use. 4) Cannabis, unlike tobacco, does not cause any narrowing of the small air passageways in the lungs.
2 :
Okay. Weed is not bad for your brain. It can foo with your memory a little, but those effects usually go away after 2-4 weeks, and aren't really that bad unless you're smoking a LOT. It does not destroy brain cells. However, it is a little bad for your lungs (inhaling any kind of smoke, including incense). Not NEARLY as bad as cigarettes (though one will want to try to avoid some shady imports that are sometimes sprayed with harmful pesticides). Smoking a joint is not going to give you cancer though. Smoking a dozen joins will probably not raise your chances of lung cancer by any noticeable amount. In fact, there are ways of smoking which decrease damage to your lungs, such as water pipes (which filter the smoke, thus much of the tar out through water) and vaporizers (which sort of 'evaporates' the THC into a purer form, with no smoke at all). Feel free to IM me with any further questions, if you want.
3 :
Well a doctor told me that weed is 3-6 times as bad to smoke as cigarettes where your longues are concerned. edit: actually nevermind that, they just told me that there's only a small correlation between weed and cancer unlike cigarettes and its better for your longues. However they did tell me that people who smoke it are twice as likely to become schitzophrenic then those who don't and you can lose your drive and become lazy.
4 :
Just don't drive after you smoke, please.
5 :
Smoking ANYTHING can give you lung cancer... Even second-hand smoke kills millions every year. Weed does more psychological things than cigarettes do and is generally more addictive... You need your brain just as much as you need your lungs!
6 :
Any foreign substance that you directly inhale is bad for your lungs. I don't care what bogus studies the weed smokers want to cite. Most people that I know - and I know a lot - who smoke week do it in addition to cigarettes and alcohol. Most of them have chronic bronchitis, regular respiratory infections, low motivation levels, impaired motor skills and a propensity to be impulsive.
7 :
Yes, it does kill your lungs, just much slower than cigarettes do, though it actually has no proven long term effects as far as mental state goes over time.
8 :
Smoke is smoke, period. It will disease the lungs, Just because one kind makes you happier than the others, does not mean you will not get cancer of the mouth, lungs or anywhere else.
9 :
There are so many differences in cannabis (weed) and tobacco you can't even compare them. They burn at different temperatures which means their smoke have different compounds. Tobacco use is for the alkaloid toxin nicotine, the plant uses for killing insects Cannabis use is for the cannabiniod content *(many similar compounds) that the plant uses for UV protection. Ironically, Nicotine both causes cancer and can cause brain and heart damage. Where as cannabis may actually be a good treatment or even a preventative measure against nicotine's effects. Sadly, almost nothing the average american knows about pot is even remotely true and had to be installed into our minds thru early propaganda. Think about it, when is the last time you hear some one over dose on pot?
10 :
Actually smoking weed is worse for your lungs than cigarettes. HOWEVER, you would never smoke as much as a tobacco smoker does AND weed is not addictive thus, it is better for you in that sense.

How much larger of a chance of developing lung cancer do I have than that of a person that wasn't exposed to:?
Second hand smoke for 12 years, and who doesn't have severe/mild-persistent asthma? Because I have developed severe asthma over the last year or so (it's increasingly gotten worse,) and I was exposed to second hand smoke for the greater part of my life. I'm only fifteen. I'm scared that I might have to deal with lung cancer when I'm older.

2 :
the chances are the same for everybody, either it lies dormant or it doesn't, but it is greater for someone that has been exposed to it then not...and just because someone gets/has lung cancer does not mean that they were a smoker
3 :
I grew up around second hand smoke until I was about 14, I had asthma that was getting worse as I was around it. I would not think that you could have cancer now but later in life I do think you have a higher risk than the regular person does.
4 :
I understand your worry about cancer but you don't have it right now and don't know if you will get it. But I wanted to address your asthma. Being around second hand smoke is definitely hard for an asthmatic, but your triggers might be allergy related too. I did not have asthma until I became allergic to cat dander, dust, pollen, rabbits, etc. in my twenties. I was also a smoker, and I actually kept in under control for several years. But the last 10 I would find myself in the hospital with severe breathing problems, at least twice a year. Now I still take my allergy pill, and I have stopped smoking and do not allow anyone to smoke in my home either. I feel great. I actually didn't quit smoking until I had a heart attack. I guess I have a thick skull!! Good luck to you and try to push for a non smoking living enviroment. It can only save hospital and doctor bills later on.

How exactly does lung cancer kill

How exactly does lung cancer kill? ?
My Mother has had small cell lung cancer for over a year now. The tumor is near her heart. She has had chemo and radiation and was told in October that neither is helping very much and she had only a few months to live. Her voice is hoarse and weak and she coughs to the point of vomiting sometimes but other than that she looks good. She has lost some weight but is still overweight and eats well.

Cells have a natural function to "turn off" or die after a set amount of time. cancer cells have that function turned off, so they just keep replicating and make a massive blob called a tumor. if the tumor, and all infected cells are not removed, it blocks up the lungs and doesn't allow oxygen into them.
2 :
Cancer just overcomes, unfortunately. Typically a person just becomes increasingly weaker and breathing becomes more difficult (with small cell). It can be either slow or fast. If her breathing becomes difficult for her, she can be put on a morphine drip which helps. people will begin to fade in and out of conciousness, and most of the time it's more difficult for loved ones (you) than it is for the person (your mom) If you haven't contacted a hospice program yet, i would go ahead and do so. I'm so very sorry for what you are going through.

Could I have lung cancer or just a scar

Could I have lung cancer or just a scar?
Can asthma cause a scar in your lungs? My doctor said he found a pencilpoint size nodule on cat scan of my lung? Of course I'm going to get it checked out with a specialist but I'm freaking out and hoping that it's just a scar from either asthma that I've had since I was 12 (I'm 23 now), or the bronchitis and pneumonia that I've had a few times. Help!

2 :
ya it could be just some scar tissue. But it's best to get checked out so you know for sure. Have you been coughing, short of breath lately, more tired, those are the usual signs of lung cancer. But right now if I were you, I'd set up an appt as soon as possible, but wouldn't worry.

Why do some smokers start smoking at 14 and live well into their 70s while others die of lung cancer

Why do some smokers start smoking at 14 and live well into their 70s while others die of lung cancer ?
These people who dont die act as Publicity billboards promoting smoking as a safe choice. Why don't they die ? how can we speed up the process.

Luck of the draw my child.
3 :
Because life is unfair.
4 :
Some people are more prone to getting cancer than others. That is just like a person lacking melanin in their skin that spends all day in the sun throughout their life and never getting melanoma.
5 :
I don't know but to me this is not a laughing matter. I had a 34 year old friend die of lung cancer in November, she smoked 2 packs of cigarettes a day. She left a 4 year old daughter behind. She may have smoked, but I feel like speeding up the process of her death a little harsh. Especially for that 4 year old girl.
6 :
Some folks are made of tougher stuff
7 :
I'm not sure but if you continue on with your attitude and get into somebodies face physically I'm sure you won't live to be 70 whether you smoke or not. Death is serious. There are people that are dying or have died recently from this disease. How would you feel if you had somebody you loved (obviously that is not the case) that was dying from, say AIDS, and some yahoo was asking if there was someway to hurry up the process. Ignorance knows no bounds. I am still surprised every once in a while about just how stupid, cruel and cowardly people can be.
8 :
Cancer is very genetic. Some people are much more likely to get cancer (whether it's lung cancer, stomach cancer, etc). It is very possible for a 14 yr old to smoke for 60 years and not develop lung cancer. I know the medical community wouldn't want to hear this, but a scientist with experience in genetics would most likely agree. Just my thoughts.
9 :
I have read up on a lot of this for its interesting. Frankly, I believe more and more in genetics. Look at the questions one is asked when they get a Dx of CA......family history of CA, what kind, etc. Also, look at the higher ratio of your chances go up in certain cancers if a parent, sister, grandmother has cancer. I work in the medical field and have seen patients who had given up smoking 30 years (few cases) and yet developed lung cancer even though they say if you stop smoking your lungs will begin getting better within 24 hours. We also see non smokers wtih same results.....and not around passive smoke. My father a non smoker lived with a 2 pack a day smoker for over 40 years.....she died of non related smoke cancer (by test) and he lived until 85 dying from a gall bladder rupture....I don't promote smoking that is a personal choice they are aware of the dangers and are addicted. You saying "speed up the process" is inhumane and am glad you aren't sick dying. So I say its all genetics.
10 :
just luck
11 :
It must be in the genes! I am a great believer in the air around us is the true poison! We breath many toxins in inner city areas, i guess it may well be like a localised lottery! And there is some evidence also which relates to 10 million deaths through europe attributed too air pollution! (BBC News report last year!) I can also put it another way! Think about those in china that are working in the plastic yards! They recycle a lot of britain and the worlds plastic bags etc! These people are getting cancer from inhaling the very same toxins that are in traffic pollution! These people may get cancer pretty quickly after working there for around 2 years or so! Even earlier! So if you place it on a slightly dilluted level in the cities, say 10% equivalent volume per year in a city! this would equate to cancer in around 25 years for a city worker! Thanks for your answer! I didn't give you best! But thanks for your support! I guess people need some justification to it! You are right! TY! GAZZA!

8 :
yes smoking is bad.. but sometimes i just need that rush too.. once in a while it's fine i guess
9 :
Uh, stop smoking. You can get lung cancer, and as a result it can give you brain caner, that's what happened to my dad, and he died 7 years ago because of it.
10 :
Bad breath, addiction, burnt-looking lungs (does that still count as lung cancer?) :)
11 :
you can't recover from cold as well as a non-smoker can. you are basically sucking tar into your lungs. it smells like shit.

there are no 'upsides' to smokingg.

heart disease, hairy tongue, yellow teeth, deep wrinkles at age 20 ugly skin, and uhhhhh..... oh yeah! DEATH!!!
17 :
Heart disease, oral cancer, poor circulation, etc. Also, the head rush will eventually go away and you will still be addicted. Quit before you get too hooked. I have seen too many people get hooked.
18 :
...well being a smoker of 15 i can tell you the head rushes will go...soon...and the only major temporary ones are... short of breath teeth color breathe smell hand smell ...other stuff somes with time, including the cough
19 :
they relax me, im around the same age as you but theyre nasty death sticks, i'm not addicted. the physical effects are pretty disgusting; yellowteeth, bad breath, tongue stains.. the internal effects are worse.
20 :
You ever walk down the street in your flip flops and get one caught between your toes? Carelessly discarded cigarettes can give you a hotfoot!
21 :
Loss of appetite, dulls your taste buds so you can't taste food. Mouth cancer. All sorts of cancer. I don't judge you for smoking; but trust me, there are more negatives than positives, since you asked.
22 :
stinky clithes, stinky cars, coughing, burns in furniture and clothes and cars and, tables, other people by acciden. Insurance is harder to come by and more expensive. Smokes cost alot and are going up. Do the math it is not worth it!
23 :
bad breath, yellow fingernails, shortened breath, and a crappy image in the eyes of people passing you on the street if you really want a head rush, try, oh i don't know, exercise! there's nothing like the feeling you get after running 3 miles, not to mention how good it is for you.
24 :
cigarettes havent been proven to cause lung cancer, anymore than stress or many other things we use in this world everyday don't let this green going bandwagon hippies trick you look it up for yourself. There isn't any reports that link lung cancer and smoking NOT ONE. (that increases the risk more than other things) its just like diet sodas if you drank 50 diet sodas a day for a year you would get cancer because they do increase your cancer risk...just not that much.
25 :
nothing good about them gives you really bad breath bad teeth bad skin i even heard that if you're a girl it'll make you look manlier and if ur a bout it'll make u look girlier...

-> You will look like 28 at age 21, and look 55 at age 30.

Effects of Tobacco Smoke Smoking KILLS Every year hundreds of thousands of people around the world die from diseases caused by smoking. One in two lifetime smokers will die from their habit. Half of these deaths will occur in middle age. Tobacco smoke also contributes to a number of cancers. The mixture of nicotine and carbon monoxide in each cigarette you smoke temporarily increases your heart rate and blood pressure, straining your heart and blood vessels. This can cause heart attacks and stroke. It slows your blood flow, cutting off oxygen to your feet and hands. Some smokers end up having their limbs amputated. Tar coats your lungs like soot in a chimney and causes cancer. A 20-a-day smoker breathes in up to a full cup (210 g) of tar in a year. Changing to low-tar cigarettes does not help because smokers usually take deeper puffs and hold the smoke in for longer, dragging the tar deeper into their lungs. Carbon monoxide robs your muscles, brain and body tissue of oxygen, making your whole body and especially your heart work harder. Over time, your airways swell up and let less air into your lungs. Smoking causes disease and is a slow way to die. The strain put on your body by smoking often causes years of suffering. Emphysema is an illness that slowly rots your lungs. People with emphysema often get bronchitis again and again, and suffer lung and heart failure. Lung cancer from smoking is caused by the tar in tobacco smoke. Men who smoke are ten times more likely to die from lung cancer than non-smokers. Heart disease and strokes are also more common among smokers than non-smokers. Smoking causes fat deposits to narrow and block blood vessels which leads to heart attack. Smoking causes around one in five deaths from heart disease. In younger people, three out of four deaths from heart disease are due to smoking. You should quit. Plus, you are much too young to be smoking, even though NOBODY should.
28 :
It is now well established smoking cigarettes is harmful to health.....esp lungs..Besides cancer, you can get Bronchitis, Emphysema, Pharyngitis besides stained teeth and effects on the Cardiovascular system causing an increased risk of sudden death, heart attack and stroke.
29 :
Emphysema, suffocation, brain cancer, throat cancer, increased chance of skin cancer, skin wrinkles and quicker aging, yellow and stained fingers, heart attack, decay of lung just to name a few.
30 :
there are definitely more negatives than positives. your teeth turn yellow, your fingernails get really gross, you can get bone cancer, you can get... the list never ends. im not just saying that to get you to quit. itll destoy your life. and believe me, cancer is the worst. im almost 14 and my mom died of cancer 2 1/2 years ago. dont do that to your loved ones.
31 :
YELLOW TEETH, HEART PROBLEMS, SAGGING EYES, IT LOOKS LIKE YOU AGE QUICKER!!!! A lot of bad things happen if you smoke, i know, my grandpa died from it. :( . . .
32 :
its addicting, smells disgusting, waste of money and expensive, annoying because smokers always have to take a break and smoke, and i wont kiss a smoker. PLEASE dont do it! im 20 and have never been a smoker. its just not cool
33 :
Ever seen spiders, well cigs lay eggs inside your stomach so if lung cancer dosnt kill you. the spider will. And also only i have the cure for this desease, and it cost like only 56 easy paments of 19.99,and one cmplicated payment of 5.67 that is payed in yen. love Billy Mays
34 :
Heart Disease, Bronchitis, Blindess, Each cigarette contains nearly 50 carcinogens, substances that are capable of causing caner. Cigarettes have ammonia, which is used to clean toilets, nickel, radioactive polonium 210. Don't believe me, look it up. Smoking can damage your blood vessels, and the carbon monoxide can reduce the oxygen-carrying ability of red blood cells, which is bad then your cells won't get adequate oxygen. Quit Smoking!
35 :
The body is adaptagenic. This means that the body builds an immunity around the toxins of the cigarettes. In affect, the body grows dependent on it. Again, the body is adaptogenic, and severe smokers can actually revert their cellular structure to no longer want cigarettes and revert to the time before smoking. Remember, the body is adaptogenic, meaning, it is a cell making machine. It is re creating copies of you over and over again. The more free radical damage (from smoking, toxins in the environment, and stress), the faster you age. So, do you want wrinkles at 49 or do you want wrinkles at 29? Don't smoke or smoke? After 40 is usually when the cancer kicks in. It doesn't necessarily have to be in the lungs, it can be anywhere else, and the smoking adds to the oxidative stress, which free radicals are known to cause cancers of every kind. Poison is poison. Think about it... Answered by an X Smoker from 12 years to 26 years.
36 :
it can make you cough up objects make you become skinny makes your body weaker because the nicotine changes the way your brain and body function by giving you an invigorating feeling At the same time it releases adrenaline, which cause an increase in blood pressure, rapid heartbeat and shallow breathing. Health problems associated with nicotine addiction include lung cancer, stroke, emphysema, heart problems and diabetes complications. Other effects of nicotine addiction are erectile dysfunction, Buerger's disease (acute inflammation of veins and arteries of the hands and feet)
37 :
Smoking increases your risk of lung cancer, stroke, heart disease, oral cancer, throat cancer, infertility, yellowing of teath, ageing of skin, etc And these are just the foirst few that spring to mind. There are no positives, and heaps of negatives.
38 :
first of all its illegal to Smoke at too young of age because it will stop you from growing completing(fact for a person of the age of 12-14), it will hurt your skin, your control over things, teeth, how fast you can run, who long you can run without getting tired, and your breath will smell. You will also have a better chance at getting Asama and having regular head akes. i have never smoked but my grandma has(she told me some) and my doctor told me the rest. Hope this helps. Also if you love the rush feeling there is a way to get a natural high. If you ecrise a lot you body will make this chemical(good) i forgot the name and it will make you feel happy and good.
39 :
Heart disease; emphysema; organ dysfunction and/or failure; diverticulitis (and resultant colonectomy); stinky, smelly colostomy bag; skin cancer; throat cancer; mouth, gum, tongue disease; loss of taste; loss of smell; digestive complications - ........just to name a few....
40 :
http://www.healthline.com/search?q1=ciggarette+smoking the tobacco company puts all kinds of sh*t in butts from congnac to chocolate soo the headrush you get will turn into nicotine cravings and urges that are not pleasant good luck
41 :
Emphasima, addiction, raspy voice, difficulty going up stairs or running or physical activity, wallet drain $$. Smoking is fine when you are young and first starting out but it takes its toll on your body. I started smoking at 15 and quit last year at 35. I did so because it was making me feel really old and gross. I was coughing alot every morning and was finding exercise difficult. If you smoke just keep it a social thing and don't become "A Smoker" Quitting after 20 years was REALLY DIFFICULT! I actually had been trying to quit for 10 years if that gives you any idea of how hard it is.
42 :
There is nothing positive about cigarettes. They cause your lungs to turn black, your teeth yellow, and will cause you to have trouble breathing. Basically it is bad for you and each time you smoke one, you are ending your life faster.
43 :
Hmmm. Clothes stink, breath stinks, car stinks, room stinks, house stinks. It's not just lung cancer but the entire degradatino of your health. Having healthy lungs mean being more fit and getting more oxygen through your blood which in turn can help detoxify your blood and all the organs in your body. It's like having clean fuel running through your engine as opposed to fuel with bits of dust, grease, particles, dirt. It also means giving your body more energy and power to fight infections. Lowered immunity and stress and poor health just keep feeding off each other until you look old and awful and feel gross and weak. Oh yeah, forgot, it ages you faster. It wrinkles up your mouth when you're always making a pout. I know old people who have smoked, bc they have lines radiating out from their lips. Their skin is also dry and wrinkles faster bc there's less oxygen pumping through their blood and detoxifying the toxins in your skin. Smoke also dries out your esophagus ultimately giving you a raspy voice in addition to countless throat and sinus infections. In your 20's a raspy voice may sound sexy but in your 30's and on it makes you sound like a dying corpse. There's better drugs out there like alcohol. Sorry, seriously, smoking is one of the worst things to do besides cutting maybe. Smoke also has all those weird toxins in it that also wreck havoc on your body and immune system. Lastly, it damages your wallet.
44 :
no positives. you are inhaling tar, and the same ingredients in rat poison. 1. wrinkles 2. dehydration 3. my moms lungs were so filled with tar, that they fused with the gall bladder, giving her "gall bladder" problems.. when she went in to have the lungs defused from her gall bladder her heart stopped, seems it was affected as well. 4. congestive heart failure twice (caused by the heart speeding up from the smoking) 5. She finally died from a stroke caused by..... smoking. Yep that head rush is actually caused by heart rush,... it sucks the life right out of you with every puff. The wrinkles alone would be enough to make me not start along with the arsenic (main ingredient in arsenic) Oh yeah I forgot to tell you of the fights we used to have when she would get dizzy from the "head/heart" rush and fall a lot. I took all matches away (she couldn't even walk to the store she would get so dizzy and fall and the only times she wasn't like that is one month off cigarettes then she would get WELL and healthier walk to the store and buy cigarettes and matches... Anyway I had to take the matches, take apart the stove so she couldn't light them on the burners. Fun Fun Fun... And pretty too with all those wrinkles, bad breath and smelly clothes she couldn't even smell.
45 :
My mother died from the affects of cigarette smoking. It is clearly printed on her death certificate. She had emphysema, a slow and painful death. If you want to know what smoking does to your body go to a hospital or nursing home and see a cancer or emphysema patient. It's not a pretty sight. I beg you to quit now while you are still young enough for your lungs to repair themselves. There are no pluses to smoking. If you want a head rush try standing up too fast.
46 :
I'm an occasional smoker myself, and here's what I think. Positives: you look cool, you get a sort of buzz from the nicotine, it's sometimes a good stress reliever Negatives: heart problems (I haven't experienced this, but I heard of it), addiction, cancer, you smell like it unless you spray on cologne or perfume to cover the scent, your breath smells like it unless you chew gum afterwards
47 :
Throat cancer Mouth Cancer Heart Disease Besides it being incredibly bad for your health, smoking also: Makes your hair smell like cigarettes (instead of fresh & clean) Makes your clothes smell like stale cigarette smoke (instead of fresh & clean) Makes your breath wreak. Stains your teeth yellowish brown You'll quickly gain a regular unattractive smokers cough - and will cough even when you aren't smoking. Smokers have "whisky voice" women sound a bit gruff. Smoking causes premature wrinkles due to its drying effects. Excessive wrinkling around the mouth. Smokers have significant less endurance due to a weakened lung capacity. P.S. you'll go broke being a smoker - 1 pack of cigarettes is now anywhere from $5.00 - 10.00/pack. Alternatives for the head rush you enjoy: Hanging your head over the edge of the bed upside down and stand up quickly. Rremember when you were 5 and used to love doing that? It's the same childish rush you get when smoking. Intense exercise ALWAYS give a great rush, not just in your head - your entire body. Good luck! :)
48 :
please believe me there are no positives bad breath/ stains your teeth/mouth and lung cancer/throat cancer/ emphysema / it stunts your growth/ high blood pressure/poisons your blood/ smell stays on your body in your hair / it ages your appearance/// makes you look at least ten years older /// and it is very hard to quit.. i use to smoke quit while you have a chance

My 13 yr old black lab has lung cancer and is retianing water

My 13 yr old black lab has lung cancer and is retianing water?
He was doing well on lasix and had perked up, but the last three days he's been pretty listless, he wont eat his own food but will eat table food if hand fed. My vet says it might be time for him to be put down. My problem is if I can still get him to eat and he still lifts his head and wags his tail when i call him and he is not incontinent Should I wait to put him down? I want to wait but do not want him to suffer.
Dogs - 5 Answers

1 :
if you know your dog, you should be able to make a general judgment call, I have had a black lab for about the same amount of time, his throat is slowly closing up, it all depends on their qualitiy of life, he seems perfectly content with his fatty tumors and just coughing, just try to get a general idea, if they cant walk and cant get up the stairs by themselves, well maybe it is time to let go, but it also might be time to just go ask a vet for some pain medicine for your pup
2 :
I believe that you mean RETAINING? It's time to let the poor dog go in peace.
3 :
He is suffering. It would be a loving gift to have him euthanized. I know it is hard but sometimes it is the best thing we can do for them. So sorry. He has been with you a long time. Let him go in peace.
4 :
It's up to you. You know your dog best and only you can make that decision. However, if his condition has gotten so bad that it is causing him to be that lethargic then I assure you he is certainly very uncomfortable if not actually in pain. You don't want to wait until your dog can't even lift his head. And most dogs will wag their tails for their loved ones even if they themselves are in a lot of pain. And incontinence shouldn't even enter into the equation...incontinence is inconvenient for the human caretaker, but generally not painful for a dog. A dog can be in excruciating pain and not be incontinent.
5 :
My last Lab lasted 13 1/2 years and at that time I put her down. I have had many dogs in my 64 years and I have put all of them down at the time I determined that their life was not their life anymore. When a dog cannot be a dog anymore then it is time. A dog will do anything for you and can not make the call; you must toughen your spirit and give back some of that love by letting go. Our Government should do the same for us but that will probably not happen in my lifetime. When the dog you love cannot do the things that make him or her a dog; such as walk, play, go out to relieve themselves; or eat on their own them it is time. Of course it hurts but you cannot know how much pain they are suffering without complaint just for you and so you have to play God for a bit just because you can.

Lung Cancer how long without treatment

Lung Cancer how long without treatment?
My sister in law was diagnosed with Stage 4 terminal lung cancer. Inoperable. It has spread to her liver, throat, and parts of her brain I was told. She is 55 and in very poor health. How long does she have? She has decided no treatment for herself.
Cancer - 4 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Based on the latest statistics, 50% of people with stage 4 lung cancer die in 8 months. Females tend to live a little longer than males but all the other variables also have an impact on this. Considering her decision regarding treatment and where it has spread, I would suspect less than 4 months.
2 :
I'm so sorry to hear about your family member. Lung cancer is a horrible disease. If she has decided no treatment, I'd imagine the doctors told her that her cancer is so far along and spread that treatment wouldn't be beneficial. Only the doctors would know how long she has, but with what you've described, I would guess not too long.
3 :
She will survive longer with no chemo than with chemo. Here are some resources for naturally healing cancer: http://www.healingcancernaturally.com/
4 :
My brother developed terrible back pain and thought it was work related. Went to the doctor and to make a long story short, he found out he had cancer in his lungs, liver, brain, and spine. He lived 6 weeks.

If a person has lung cancer, does surgery on the lung speed up missed cancer cells

If a person has lung cancer, does surgery on the lung speed up missed cancer cells?
I have heard that once surgery is performed, if the doctor misses any cancer, it will really speed up.
Cancer - 6 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
I DON'T KNOW, BUT IF YOU GET ANY INFO ON THIS QUESTION PLEASE EMAIL ME WITH THAT INFO. JOHNMIRIANI@SBCGLOBAL.NET
2 :
The stress of surgery can impact the immune system, and that may cause any remaining cancer cells to grow unchecked. Lung cancer is a bad disease. Many times, it's too late to cure by the time it's found. Kids, don't smoke.
3 :
The oxygen, from opening a person up, speeds the cancer growth up.
4 :
I'm a nurse. Not really in fact it destroy any unseen and/or missed cancer cells. Just so you know, everyone of us has cancer cells in our body. It's when they are disturbed and get out of control that they become fatal. There are so many new techniques that work, a lot better than the past. I know this is a hard time for you and your family, be strong things will get better and their is always hope. I'll pray for you, I'm a Christian. It will be OK.
5 :
No, this is not true. It is possible the surgeon can miss some microscopic cancer cells, but having the surgery will not make it grow any faster.
6 :
When I had lung surgery (non-smoker) from testes metastis cancer, they removed good tissue as well. The easiest way to describe this is to put a nickle on top of a quarter. The nickle is the cancer, the amount of tissue removed is the quarter. It is possible to still spread, so usually the procedure is slow.

how many ciggarettes do you have to smoke to get lung cancer

how many ciggarettes do you have to smoke to get lung cancer?
i HAVE A FRIEND who has been smoking a long time and i am worried about her.
Cancer - 10 Answers

1 :
you dont even have to smoke anymore to get lung cancer -- 2nd hand smoke.....
2 :
there's not an exact number.. you can smoke one and get cancer, or you can smoke thousands and not get cancer at all.
3 :
It doesn't really have to do with the #, some smoke all theirs lives and don't get it...some never smoked in their life but get it from 2nd hand smoke : (
4 :
One. You need two "hits" to get any type of cancer, first is the genentic design for it, i.e. you were born with the genetic dispostion for it. That is why some families are more prone to cancer. Next is a cell mutation. That's when cancer starts and then might grow. So all your friend needs is both of those things, and nobody knows for sure how many cigarettes it would take.
5 :
depends upon your body resistance .
6 :
she's not helping herself by smoking, but many smokers play chance... this worker for my friend call your local ACS and ask if they know someone who will talk to her ...they can find a patient ( if willing ) to call her maybe after hearing their story about cancer maybe she'll take note than
