Untreated both can kill you, but it is possible to live without a rectum, so rectal cancer which has not spread yet can be cured by removing the rectum. It also depends on how far advanced the disease is, the overall health of the patient, the treatment they choose, and on and on. I know that cancers of the colon and rectum have a good chance of cure if they are caught early. I don't know as much about lung cancer.

There are over 200 different types of cancer and nearly all of them have the potential to be deadly. Survival from cancer depends on many different factors . . it depends on the type of cancer, location of the disease, stage and grade of tumor, the overall health of the patient, patient age, and the response to treatment. In order to understand cancer . . any type of cancer . . and its ability to be life threatening you must know that cancer is a progressive disease. Cancer starts out as a single mutated cell located anywhere in the body. That one malignant cell can grow into a tumor . . and will grow indefinitely unless it is treated. Tumor growth depends on cancer type . . some tumors grow slowly for 20 years or more, while other tumor types are aggressive and fast and can grow in months, weeks, or even days. In the very early stages of cancer . . the tumor is small . . as the disease progresses to a later stage . .the tumor becomes large and more tumors can begin to grow in the same location . . at some point the larger tumors can begin to shed hundreds of malignant cells into the blood stream or lymphatic system in a process called metastasis. Metastatic cancer is called stage IV disease. The mets can travel all over the body and lodge in a distant location . . common spots are the liver, the lungs, bone, or the brain . . new cancer colonies will start to grow in those spots and repeat the entire process . . growth and than metastasis . .indefinitely unless treatment stops it. So you need to ask your grandmother what stage her cancer is in . . if it is in the early stages than it can be treated with surgery and maybe chemo . . if it is in the late stages than the cancer can be treated but it will be very difficult. There are no guarantees. You can read more about the disease at the National Cancer Institute: Colon and Rectal Cancer http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/types/colon-and-rectal

as i have looked in the wikipedia article below, scc is not specific to the lungs, but may occur in any part of the body, as long as the squamous epithelial cells are affected...any also, its effects on the lungs are on the bronchi... since i know fairly about squamous cells, before reading the article i presume that my choices are A and C...but it is also stated in the artcile that the bronchi are affected...so my answer is A

Results The youngest birth cohorts (born after 1965) have almost one-fourth lower lung cancer risk relative to those born around the First World War. A more than 50% relative decline in death rates among those between 35 and 39 years of age was observed in both sexes in recent years. The youngest age-cohorts (30-39 years of age) in males also showed a significant decrease in death rates in 1998-2002 by more than 3% every five years from 1958-1962 onwards. However, death rate declines in females are slower. http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?artid=2001146

I don't know really. My Dad was diagnosed with lung cancer when he was 56 years old. :(
3 :
it should be by late twenties if you are a heavy smoker in your teens....

Estimate the lung cancer risk to your family from the radon level in your home. Mortality risks from radon. Comparison to everyday risks. ... the usual lung cancer - people die younger. The average age for radon-induced lung cancer is 65 years compared to 72 for all lung cancer deaths ...www.radonseal.com/radon-health-risks.htm

I have the correct answer to this question because I just heard a cancer research doctor give a lecture with slides of his new research. The answer is that the lung cancer starts 20 years after you start smoking...almost exactly and almost every time.

i found out 1 month ago i have it also,i have not told anybody.so my wife or family doesn't know.don't know how to tell them.my wife knows something is wrong but she doesn't know what.so i will let someone else answer this for you.i feel for your husband because i remember loosing my dad.you never get over it.and i have 3 sons.tell him to hang in there and make good use of the time he has.

My dad made it over a year, and his was non-treatable. Your husband is doing some anticipatory grieving. Cut him some slack if he gets short tempered, don't continually ask if he's okay..... tell him once if he ever wants to talk, you are there for him. Volunteer to do stuff for dad, as he will have decreased energy and shouldn't waste it on house cleaning, grocery shopping, etc. Spend quality time with him. See if he wants to make a video or something for the grand kids. All in all, spend time with him. There are many types of lung cancer, and each is different. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help..... Sue

there is little time left, I'm sorry. my 23 year old daughter pass away on Jan. 13 2007, she never smoke! she was in perfect health . we found out on Aug 17, 2006 she had lung cancer. she pass away 149 days later. we were not prepared, Jessica has three younger sisters 21, 19, 16. and before you knew she was gone. the only thing i can say, let your father in-law, make he own choice.love from the abate family.abate6@bellsouth.net peter .regina.angel jessica. christa. elenarose. gina

Tell your husband to be there for his father and don't make him feel any worse than what he is feeling by becoming depressed. He should be the one to make him happy when he is depressed. Go to his doctor visits with him, this can give him strength. Just pray, pray, and pray some more. Being sad around him makes him think the worse. It is a hard thing to do when everyone is thinking death around him. Tell him not to treat him any different, just be there for him remember the Father needs his son more than he needs him right now. Just keep your husband busy and not moping around the house all day. Do things that can make him happy after being there for his father.

i am so sorry about the news you have got about your father in law, i totally understand when your husband is going through.... My dad was diagnosed with lung cancer in February this year, it is hard to be strong and be positive for them when you just want to crumple to the floor and cry.... my dad lost his 'unfaif' fight to the evil disease on 4th May, i still feel much anger towards this very rapid cancer.....no one is ever fully prepared no matter how long you have known ...... but we still had hope that he still could have at least 12 months.... my advice to your hubby is to spend as much time with his dad as possible, taking him out, chatting about anything and everything...... anything to take both their minds away from the cancer if only for 10 minutes...........all share lots of love n hugs and give each other support. good wishes to you all xx

I feel your pain. My father was diagnosed with metastatic Stage IV lung cancer on 1/17.07 and passwed away on 6/3/07. It was a tough battle but he was brave to the end. The best advice that I can give is listen to the doctors but also try anything possible outside of the normal cancer treatment. Chemotherapy did not work on my father and by the time I found out about alternative treatments, it was too late. This is a very difficult time in everyones life involved. The second piece of advice that I can give you is to support your father in law and advocate for his care. My dad was 78 and I had more meetings with his doctors than he did. Since his cancer was metastatic, there were 3 doctors involved and keeping them all coordinated and on the same page is critical. You will find that you and your family are alone in taking the "lead" in his medical care as far as advocacy is concerned. I am here to help and will answer any questions that I can. God Bless You

My husband had it and died very, very fast. We told the children and surrounded ourselves with our family. We cried a lot and held each other. Get hospice going soon. You will have so much more support and he can be made comfortable. We got it very late. I was angry that he had to suffer at all.

Can lung cancer cause paralysis

Can lung cancer cause paralysis?
Mom diagnosed with lung cancer in both lungs. She is in therapy since she is not able to stand or walk. What is the life expectancy? She is 58 years old and I am terribly afraid of losing her. What can I do to help her when she is discharged? :( Thanks.

not that I know of, but chemo and radiation can cause nasty side effects. Likely, her inability to stand/walk is caused by severe weakness from the cancer/surgery or whatever she had. it is impossible to tell life expectancy when you didnt say what stage cancer she has.... just be there to listen, do things around the house that she cannot do.
2 :
Since the lung cancer is in both lungs this is consistent with metastatic or stage four lung cancer. Lung cancer frequently will metastasize to brain, bones, liver, and adrenals. If it involves the brain than it can cause symptoms like you describe depending on location and size. If it involves the vertebra it can result in compression of the spinal cord and subsequent weakness. Also some lung cancers secrete hormones or chemicals which can cause changes in calcium and other electrolytes. Finally, just having cancer uses up a great deal of calories and now with the addition of chemo or radiation her weakness may worsen. God bless.
