Where can I go to get a lung cancer screening

Where can I go to get a lung cancer screening?
I smoked heavy for many years and looking to get my lungs checked and reviewed. Where would one *ideally* want to go; I don't want them to miss anything as you can imagine. Thanks in advance =) What a great site!

There is no such thing as lung cancer "screening". Several, large screening trials have been done over the past 35 years and have not changed the overall outcome of lung cancer. Therefore, screening is not recommended. That being said, there are many people in a "high risk population" with known COPD, emphysema and "heavy" smoking history who are being considered for screening. This is usually done with a low-dose CT scan of the chest. Talk with your primary care physician about it. Insurance will likely not cover it. If you are willing to pay out of pocket you can probably have the CT scan done. Just know this: If they find a nodule or abnormality, you will be committed to investigation of it, which can be a double edged sword. Biopsy of the lung is not without risk. With so many chest CT scans being performed, more and more lung biopsies are being ordered of lesions that are not cancerous.

Is it possible to have lung cancer if a cop works the jail system for years

Is it possible to have lung cancer if a cop works the jail system for years?
Husband is a cop. He worked the jails for years. Always came home with some illness or another back then. Now 8 years later he is showing spots in his lungs and is currently getting chest xrays every six weeks to watch the growth of a possible tumor in his lungs. He has never smoked a day in his life of anything. We are starting to wonder if its work related from him working the jails. He has had bronchitis so many times in the last ten years we have lost count. Your thoughts of possibilities?

It can be from anything 2nd hand smoke or anything else not exactly for working in a jail

Anything is certainly possible, especially in those conditions. Remember how schools had to go through major changes for asbestos. It could have been the building materials, genetics. I truly hope it is nothing as serious as that. My aunt is fight lung cancer and is very difficult to go through. My best wishes for you both. DRAGON 2012 "Great fortune for U.S."

The prison population is a high risk population but more for things like TB, hepatitis, HIV. Your husband probably had that tumor for quite some time, and they kept telling him it was bronchitis. That's how some lung cancers go. I know of two women who worked in the health care industry, never smoked a day in their lives, were diagnosed with bronchitis forever, and finally died of lung cancer.

It's possible, depending on what he was exposed to. Or it could be that he had some atypical cells all these years that contributed to his bronchitis and it's now progressing into a tumor. Unless an air quality test revealed something or there was a trend among guards and inmates I doubt anything could be proven definitively. Some people are predisposed to getting bronchitis. My friend gets it once or twice yearly and I haven't had it since I was a kid. Perhaps being in a germy environment with poor ventilation combined with a predisposition has been the cause for these problems. Best of luck to you and your husband.

asbestos could still be in any old government building. by govt. i mean a state or federally run older facility. u know im hoping its nothing jj. now smack him in the head for the cat and laugh for a little bit! ;)
6 :
My mother worked corrections and that happened to her, though she smoked, too. The comedian Andy Kaufman didn't smoke, but his lung cancer is often blamed on the smoking in the clubs he used to play in. He should get disability if so,
7 :
it could very well be. has the workplace been tested lately for asbestos or other carcinogens? hope he get over this illness and annoys u soon!! lol
8 :
The spots could have been caused by about anything he has been exposed to. It does not even have to be anything from work and only had to be exposed only once. It is almost impossible to blame it on one thing. When the doctors found a problem with my left lung, I was given a biopsy. It turned out to be a tumor so they operated taking the tumor and half a lung with it. That saved my life.
9 :
Most likely has some possibility of causing his problems. Our jail was smoke free, but I know that the county jail had smoking areas, and it was always a fog in there, so I know that the guards most likely have developed problems later on. It may be difficult to get a legal action against the agency, but it may be worth your effort. Good luck.

lung cancer with brain lesions, radiation has been done

lung cancer with brain lesions, radiation has been done?
My dad got diagnosed with lung cancer last year, unfortunately some of the cancer had split off and made its way to the brain. He underwent radiation on his head and has completed numerous rounds of chemo to which the lung cancer has subsided by 25%. However, he is now back in the hospital because he fainted and has more brain lesions. They have put him on steroids to decrease the sweeling, just wondering what the outcome is looking like.

Lung cancer outcome and surgery risks

Lung cancer outcome and surgery risks?
I have a relative who currently has one lung (the other was removed years ago), and recently found out they have lung cancer. A tumor was found in the upper right lobe and one lymph node is involved. Doctors will be doing surgery to remove what they can etc. I am wondering what are the risks of cancer in that area, what is the risks of having one lung, and how long can a person live in this condition. My relative never smoked nor was around anyone who did.

The body is an amazing machine, if you will. It can tolerate the removal of an organ the one left will compensate for the one lost. The choice is one your relative will have to weigh. What will be the outcome of not having the surgery and what will happen if he/she does? Always get another opinion unless this Dr has treated them before and knows the patient well. No one can know how long anyone will live with or without intervention. I know one of my sister-in-laws lived a long time with only one lung. She was a smoker before the lung was removed and never smoked after that. So, it's hard to say. I do wish your relative the best. God bless

I know long active exposure to Nobelium (Is it Nobelium, I'm not sure) generates radioactivity that effects the lungs.

What is the difference between lung cancer and anthesema

What is the difference between lung cancer and anthesema?
Which one is worse and How long do you have to live once you are diognosed with them?

I think when you write anthesema you mean emphysema. If thats the case, then theres a big difference betwen emphysema and lung ca (but both are related to smoking). Lung cancer is cancer. Emphysema is a type of obstructive lung disease (damaged lungs but not cancer). Both can kill you depending on the severity of the emphysema or type of cancer. I'd say just don't smoke, and if you do quit now...

Lung Cancer - death, Asthma, you can live.

There are different types of lung cancer. Small cell lung cancer (about 20% all lung cancers) - 99% of patient are smokers or ex-smokers. Non-small cell lung cancer (the other 80%) - cigarettes are still a major cause, other causes being occupational exposure such as asbestos, radon, hydrocarbons and metals such as chromium and nickel.
