My 72-year-old grandmother has been diagnosed with stage 3 lung cancer. The doctor says it is inoperable. She began radiation therapy this week (so far they have not said anything about chemo) she has been a smoker since the 1950's and is currently still smoking. What are her chances of survival.

I am very sorry for your grandmother's diagnosis. Your grandmother's oncologist is the best source for this information. He/she knows the case best and can best opine about her chances given her overall health and the specific kind of lung cancer she has. In general, stage 3 lung cancer is considered incurable and it has a low 5-year survival rate. The 5-year survival rate is under 10%.
