Where can I go to get a lung cancer screening

Where can I go to get a lung cancer screening?
I smoked heavy for many years and looking to get my lungs checked and reviewed. Where would one *ideally* want to go; I don't want them to miss anything as you can imagine. Thanks in advance =) What a great site!

There is no such thing as lung cancer "screening". Several, large screening trials have been done over the past 35 years and have not changed the overall outcome of lung cancer. Therefore, screening is not recommended. That being said, there are many people in a "high risk population" with known COPD, emphysema and "heavy" smoking history who are being considered for screening. This is usually done with a low-dose CT scan of the chest. Talk with your primary care physician about it. Insurance will likely not cover it. If you are willing to pay out of pocket you can probably have the CT scan done. Just know this: If they find a nodule or abnormality, you will be committed to investigation of it, which can be a double edged sword. Biopsy of the lung is not without risk. With so many chest CT scans being performed, more and more lung biopsies are being ordered of lesions that are not cancerous.
