Why do some smokers start smoking at 14 and live well into their 70s while others die of lung cancer

Why do some smokers start smoking at 14 and live well into their 70s while others die of lung cancer ?
These people who dont die act as Publicity billboards promoting smoking as a safe choice. Why don't they die ? how can we speed up the process.

Because life is unfair.

Some people are more prone to getting cancer than others. That is just like a person lacking melanin in their skin that spends all day in the sun throughout their life and never getting melanoma.

I don't know but to me this is not a laughing matter. I had a 34 year old friend die of lung cancer in November, she smoked 2 packs of cigarettes a day. She left a 4 year old daughter behind. She may have smoked, but I feel like speeding up the process of her death a little harsh. Especially for that 4 year old girl.

I'm not sure but if you continue on with your attitude and get into somebodies face physically I'm sure you won't live to be 70 whether you smoke or not. Death is serious. There are people that are dying or have died recently from this disease. How would you feel if you had somebody you loved (obviously that is not the case) that was dying from, say AIDS, and some yahoo was asking if there was someway to hurry up the process. Ignorance knows no bounds. I am still surprised every once in a while about just how stupid, cruel and cowardly people can be.

Cancer is very genetic. Some people are much more likely to get cancer (whether it's lung cancer, stomach cancer, etc). It is very possible for a 14 yr old to smoke for 60 years and not develop lung cancer. I know the medical community wouldn't want to hear this, but a scientist with experience in genetics would most likely agree. Just my thoughts.

I have read up on a lot of this for its interesting. Frankly, I believe more and more in genetics. Look at the questions one is asked when they get a Dx of CA......family history of CA, what kind, etc. Also, look at the higher ratio of your chances go up in certain cancers if a parent, sister, grandmother has cancer. I work in the medical field and have seen patients who had given up smoking 30 years (few cases) and yet developed lung cancer even though they say if you stop smoking your lungs will begin getting better within 24 hours. We also see non smokers wtih same results.....and not around passive smoke. My father a non smoker lived with a 2 pack a day smoker for over 40 years.....she died of non related smoke cancer (by test) and he lived until 85 dying from a gall bladder rupture....I don't promote smoking that is a personal choice they are aware of the dangers and are addicted. You saying "speed up the process" is inhumane and am glad you aren't sick dying. So I say its all genetics.

It must be in the genes! I am a great believer in the air around us is the true poison! We breath many toxins in inner city areas, i guess it may well be like a localised lottery! And there is some evidence also which relates to 10 million deaths through europe attributed too air pollution! (BBC News report last year!) I can also put it another way! Think about those in china that are working in the plastic yards! They recycle a lot of britain and the worlds plastic bags etc! These people are getting cancer from inhaling the very same toxins that are in traffic pollution! These people may get cancer pretty quickly after working there for around 2 years or so! Even earlier! So if you place it on a slightly dilluted level in the cities, say 10% equivalent volume per year in a city! this would equate to cancer in around 25 years for a city worker! Thanks for your answer! I didn't give you best! But thanks for your support! I guess people need some justification to it! You are right! TY! GAZZA!
