My Mother has small cell lung cancer, about how long might she have

My Mother has small cell lung cancer, about how long might she have?
She was diagnosed in April, 2008. It is in the extended phase and they recently found the cancer in her bones (like her pelvic bones) and as of friday they also found legions all over the front and back of her brain. The doctors are not wanting to give us a time estimite on how long she might have and I just really need to know. I was wondering if any one out there knew a good web site or has gone through this with a loved one and could possibly shed some light on this subject.

There is no estimate when it comes to the amount of time left... The doctors said that my grandmother had 5 years left. She ended up living for another 5 years. You cannot go on what a doctor says or what anyone might say. Just spend every day with her like it is her last.

We can't tell you exactly how much time she has. The oncologist doesn't want to make predictions based on statistics because they are always wrong for each special individual. I can tell you that you will probably see it coming when it gets down to the last month or two, and you will see a downward trend even before that. As long as she is able to be active, maintain her strength, eat well, maintain her weight and have no trouble breathing, you should have some time left. Enjoy every good day to the fullest. Why do you really want to know? Over my 20 years as a cancer specialist doctor, I saw hundreds of people with lung cancers. Each was different. Often family members would push to know the future. When they heard numbers they didn't like, they often bargained for a more favorable prediction as if that might help. It's a no win situation for doctors to make guesses like this. You will hear many answers on this site where people say the doctor "gave" someone a certain amount of time and it turned out to be wrong. That is because it is always a guess based on statistics. Maybe your mom will do much better than the average statistical person. Here's a site you can use to study the stats if you wish. You are looking for "Stage IV lung cancer" http://lungdiseases.about.com/od/lungcancer/a/lungcancerstage.htm If you want a medical professional site with statistics from multiple university group studies (much more complex) - - http://www.meb.uni-bonn.de/cancer.gov/CDR0000062945.html#REF_44 Here you are looking for extensive stage or stage IV small cell lung carcinoma.

Emmy, I cannot give you a better answer than the doctor, but I do moderate a support group and it may help you. It is a close group with some very nice people. To the Doctor Above--Would you consider joining the group to provide some medical responses?

If you smoke or know somebody that does just please stop. I dont know how and im not a doctor or anything but I know that it kills u. My grandma died and suffered from lung cancer and she smoked. Please listen!
2 :
This is a joke, right???? Tobacco smoke is full of tars and carcinogenics --compounds that cause cancer. Reduce the exposure, you reduce the cances of cancer of the lung. Cancer of the lung, is relatively rare in non-smokers --- not non-existant, but relatively rare.
3 :
They say that if you quit smoking , after a certain amount of time, your body reverts back to the condition it was prior to smoking. Peace!
4 :
I'm not sure but it does lower the risk
5 :
hahahahahaa Thats a good one...Are u serious,I smoked for 35 years and got lung cancer and had sugery and have been cancer free for 5 years...Due to I quit 5 years ago...Everytime u smoke you are covering your lungs with tar.If you quit your lungs will repair it self if it isn't to late.

One of the guests above made a couple of good points, namely, that some people smoke all their lives and get no serious illness. And, further, that Collins ate a "pure", but highly acid-producing diet. This person is correct when he/she says we have to look at the entire picture. Collins unfortunately sees only two methods of curing disease: the traditional, simple cures of yore, OR the violent, damaging slash-burn-poison routine that he went through on the grounds that modern society is so "technical" & un-natural that our medical treatments have to be un-natural, also! Talk about yin & yang! It is a fact that there ARE folks with cancer who have cured themselves with gentle methods even in this day and age. The big hurdle was getting over the fear that comes with the diagnosis. I am sorry to hear that Collins could come up with nothing better than astragalus, presumably because it is an Oriental herb, whilst ignoring various natural approaches that western society has to offer. What is the point of macrobiotic dietary ideology, anyway, if so many who have followed it for decades are falling over dead of horrid diseases? How long will it take macrobiotic devotees to "get it" - that their approach is not beneficial? How could I be so ignorant in this issue. It has been more than 35 years that I want to do research of this. I did not have time for anything. Thank God for this info. I knew it that It was dangerous but I did not know why especificaly. I donne this reading because I heard a comment by the doctor who refused to do surgery a heavy smoker patient when I was lissening in the other doctor office's room. I am not a smoker. But I witnessed the death of my ex-boyfriend with lung cancer Was George Harrison a vegan? If he still used animal milk in his diet, along with the very yin Indian spices, being vegetarian wouldn't have helped much. He also seemed to smoke commercial cigarettes and was known as a chain smoker, and not an outdoor-only imbiber. American Spirit will send you the two-page sheet -- packed to the margins of all the chemicals and additives added to commericial cigarettes--with the bleached papers and materials in filters being even more damaging. I believe those who smoke under three cigarettes of organic tobacco a day, perhaps after meals (not breakfast!), and only take two or three inhales at a time before stubbing it out, would probably would have a difficult time contracting cancer from such moderate use. As American Spirit states in its informative packet--most people smoking the organic tobacco, find they use less and less. Since it is a habit, the whole rolling process also slows one down a bit. Anyway, I believe extremely moderate use of tobacco, outdoors, with cleansing breaths afterwards and a strict vegan macrobiotic diet, would leave one healthier than a mediocre diet with lots of yin bingeing--which a couple of puffs might have prevented. Just an opinion. I discovered macrobiotics at the age of 20. I'm now 47 and have the occasional cigarette. I would first distinguish between the usual commercial cigarettes that are full of chemicals and taste awful, and the organic cigarettes that are essentially pure tobacco. Most cancer statistics are based on people who smoke the heavily chemicallized products. Then there is the factor of quantity. No matter how pure, excessive quantity can change anything. I believe Georges Ohsawa observed that there is no poisonous substance, only excess. That would suggest that if one were to smoke even the most chemically laden cigarettes, if they smoked only one a year and further took measures to balance it by plenty of good air, water, food and thought, that cigarette could actually help, or at least not harm. Where the healthful balance rests has to be determined on an individual basis. Certainly a pack or two of chemical cigarettes a day is asking for trouble. Quantity changes quality.

food ? , maybe vegetables , fruits or things like this . But actually if u r this much sad for your lungs , try 2 smoke fewer and if ur living in a polluted city like me , try to have some masks !
8 :
how about making brownies instead of smoking, that way you can get your chocoalte fix at the same time.
9 :
If u r not going to quit anytime soon, you should have garlic, onions and plenty of different kinds of hot peppers. I have read that these are good foods for the lungs.

12 :
pineapple tomatoe and any thing with lycopene such as spinich. Take your multivitamin. Quit smoking.
13 :
Weed isn't known to cause cancer. Drinking lots of water helps to clean the lungs - 2-3 litres per day.
