Although cancer can be viewed as a chronic disease (if under control), also because it develops over a long period of time, by chronic disease of the lung medicine considers long-lasting conditions characterized by damage of lung tissue, obstruction of the airways, inflammation and clinical symptoms that are a result of such pathological processes. Cancer tends to kill you much faster, and chronic diseases you can treat and keep under control for decades, until respiratory insufficiency weakens your body to the extent that it becomes susceptible to dangerous infections, or until multiple organ damage occurs.
